CHL goaltender Dolson signs
BLOOMINGTON — Bloomington PrairieThunder coach Derek Booth may have found the remedy for the leaky goaltending that plagued the team last season with Friday’s signing of Derek Dolson. Dolson, 26, began his professional career in 2004-05 with Odessa of the Central Hockey League where he posted a career best .934 save percentage. In three seasons with Odessa, Dolson compiled a 31-27-8 record and a .924 save percentage. Bloomington’s goalies combined for a .896 save percentage last season. “The goalie position is one that we felt we needed to improve on from last season, and we believe Derek can do the job,” Booth said. “Dolson is one of those guys whose save percentage speaks for itself. I’ve heard a lot of good things about him from the coaches in the Central League. “He is an aggressive-type goalie. He challenges those shots and puts the rebounds in the corner. He’s a guy that has a great passion for the game, and he’s very excited about getting here and getting going.” The 6-foot, 185-pound Dolson is a native of Kitchener, Ont. “I like to force the action,” Dolson said. “I don’t like to react. I like to control the game as much as possible.” Dolson is the seventh player to sign with the Thunder for the upcoming season. The others include returnees Tim Schneider, Sam Miller, Jamison Orr, and Casey Handrahan, and newcomers Jarrod Skalde and Don Parsons. “I’m being very cautious of who we’re signing,” Booth said. “There’s a game plan behind this, and we want to make sure we’re offering contracts to the right guys to fit the mold of our game plan.” Booth plans to bring approximately 24 players to preseason training camp when it begins Oct. 8. “I think we’re ahead of last season’s signings,” Booth said. “This season with (new owner) Tony Lisman we don’t hope to win, we expect to win. So we want to bring in the right players.” The Thunder opens the International Hockey League regular season Oct. 20 at Flint. Its first home game is Oct. 26 at 7:05 p.m. against the Fort Wayne Komets at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. |
