Intercity Soccer Tournament: CCHS rallies to tie NCHS
Patrick Kniery’s two-goal outburst with time running out capped a furious Central Catholic comeback as the Saints forged a 3-3 tie against Normal Community in an Intercity Soccer Tournament contest Thursday at NCHS. Central Catholic, whose record moved to 3-1-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the tourney, trailed 3-1 after Kyle Beasley scored in the 63rd minute to give the Ironmen a two-goal cushion. A missed penalty kick opportunity could have deflated any hopes for a Central comeback, but Kniery took the game on his shoulders at that point. The senior midfielder scored with 90 seconds remaining off an assist from Kendall Cox to trim the lead to 2-1 before finding the back of the net on an unassisted goal with 13 seconds left to salvage the tie. NCHS (0-1-2, 0-1-1) jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead on goals by Aaron Tipsord and Aaron Moore before Kniery scored the first of his three goals early in the second half. Central goalkeeper Dan Kelch made 18 saves, while the Saints put nine shots on the NCHS goal. West blanks BHS Mark Backsmeier and Tyler DeGroot scored second-half goals as Normal West stayed unbeaten in the Intercity tourney with a 2-0 victory over Bloomington at the Prairie Cities Soccer League complex. The Wildcats (2-1, 2-0) peppered the BHS net with 23 shots. The Raiders (1-3, 0-3) could manage only four shots against West netminder Cameron Pollit.
