5 years ago (2002): Kyle Orton completed 14 of 28 passes for 250 yards including three touchdowns as Purdue cruised past Illinois State, 51-10, before a season-opening Ross-Ade Stadium crowd of 47,701. It was the largest crowd ever to witness an ISU football game.

15 years ago (1992): Pantagraph sports writer Randy Kindred won a third-place award in sports column writing in the Illinois Associated Press Editors’ Association annual contest. Kindred, who has covered sports for the Pantagraph for 12 years, won a first-place award in the 1990 contest.

25 years ago (1982): Leafing through the NCAA football press kit, and dallying in the 1957 highlights section, brought back memories of Pete Elliott, the former Bloomington High School all-sports standout who’s director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. He played (Michigan) and coached (Cal and Illinois) in the Rose Bowl.

50 years ago (1957): Bruce Johnston, Lostant school teacher who batted .477, and Bob Beal, Western Illinois sophomore who had a 4-0 record, won top honors for the Bloomington Indees who captured the Corn Belt League baseball flag this season under Manager Red Ringeisen.
