ST. LOUIS -- Juan Encarnacion of the St. Louis Cardinals was struck on the left eye by a foul ball while waiting in the on-deck circle in the sixth inning Friday night.

The team said Encarnacion was taken to a hospital for further examination. Encarnacion, who missed the first 1½ months recovering from wrist surgery, is batting .283 with nine home runs and 47 RBIs.

Encarnacion, who had been due to pinch hit, was felled when Aaron Miles fouled off an 0-1 pitch from Reds left-hander Jon Coutlangus. Encarnacion was down for several minutes, blood dripping from his nose, before two trainers helped him off the field.

The ball struck Encarnacion with enough force that it rolled several feet in the opposite direction.
