Cardinals’ Ankiel hits first career grand slam
By Associated Press
ST. LOUIS -- Rick Ankiel hit his first career grand slam Friday night, with his sixth-inning drive giving the St. Louis Cardinals a 7-4 lead over the Cincinnati Reds.
Ankiel gave up on pitching after bouts of wildness and injury in 2005 and began the road back as a minor league outfielder. He hit his fifth homer since being recalled by the Cardinals on Aug. 9.
Earlier in August, Ankiel became only the 12th player in major league history to hit his first homer as a pitcher, then later as a position player.
Ankiel’s slam came off Reds reliever Eddie Guardado.
