Hillary jokes Bill looked into No. 2 job

NEW YORK -- Hillary Rodham Clinton has already had to forgo one potential running mate - her husband. Asked by talk-show host David Letterman if Bill Clinton could serve as her vice president should she be elected to the White House, the former first lady acknowledged that he could not.

"Believe me," she joked, "he looked into that."

She also remarked that if the Constitution didn't forbid a president from a third term, "he might be running."

Such easy banter marked Clinton's seventh appearance on "The Late Show," which was celebrating its 14th anniversary on CBS. She first appeared on Feb. 14, 1994, when Letterman's mother, Dorothy, interviewed her briefly from the Winter Olympics in Norway.

On Thursday's show, Clinton recounted a summer in Alaska during which she donned boots and an apron to gut salmon with a spoon.

"Best preparation for being in Washington that you can possibly imagine," she joked.

Clinton talked shop, too, discussing the need for campaign finance reform, how to pull troops out of Iraq and the importance of caring for wounded veterans. She said that while resistance to a female commander in chief has diminished, it hasn't disappeared.

"I think it's not so much that people don't think a woman can do the job, it's just that we've never done it before," she said. "I'm not running because I'm a woman; I'm running because I think I'm the best-qualified and experienced person who can do the job. But I know that it's a big deal that I might be the first woman president."

Clinton also read a "Top Ten List" of tongue-in-cheek campaign promises, including No. 3: "We will finally have a president who doesn't mind pulling over and asking for directions."

" I'm pretty sure I learned in government class years ago that a person cannot serve more than two terms as president and two terms as vice president, which, if true, Bill Clinton CAN serve as vice president. Not that I'm advocating he do so, I'm just saying ... Shouldn't a presidential wannabe know this? "

" with America through mainstream entertainment. I would not vote for Hilary for dog catcher of Hope Arkansas which does hold the distinction of watermelon capital of the world. Yet this wretch has the unmitigated gall to show up for TV shows. Why is this person not focusing on the agendas of New Yorkers and doing the job she is being paid to do? Do none of you people ever realize that of the candidates in the race only Hilary, McCain, Biden, Obama, are still on the taxpayers payroll? When are the citizens going to get theri monies worth out of these creightons? "

" Like Bush has been better? Oh instead of a few scud missles he has wasted 3000 lives on an endless fight for a pointless cause. Of course you will say he is freeing the Iraqi people...but what does that have to do with your so called "War On Terror"? "

" Sure the Republicans don't raise taxes ... just raise the dept ceiling. Why get another job when all you really need is a few more charge cards? That's the Republican way. Charge Charge Charge. "

" ARE U SERIOUS? Clinton played off of the old roman adage "Feed the masses and run the gov't the way you want." While you may think he was the greatest president ever because our economy was great I have to remind you, we were hit by 11 terrorist attacks during his terms (1 was an internal terrorist-McVeigh-so I won't hold that against him, but that still leaves 10.) and he did nothing but shoot SCUD missiles at IRAQ (oh it was ok for him to do it). He also sold LONG RANGE NUCLEAR TECHNOLOGY to china- A COMMUNIST COUNTRY! Now the only country to which we are not allied that can hit us w/ nukes is...you guessed it CHINA. Thanks big Bill, maybe he should have been more worried about his foreign policies than his intern policies (pun intended). "

" "I'm running because I think I'm the best-qualified and experienced person who can do the job" What in the world makes her think that? Get real. And this, "resistance to a female commander in chief has diminished" I would agree with completely. I think most folks in the military don't care if their leader if female or male. What they care about is their ability to LEAD. Senator Clinton has ZERO experience EVER doing this. She has NEVER led anything. At least her husband had led the State of Arkansas for many years. Still not the same as leading the largest and most powerful military force in history, but it counts as leadership. That's my biggest beef with Senator Clinton, besides some basic disagreements on taxes and the right to life, is that she has absolutely no leadership experience. How can she possibly say she is the best candidate when she has no experience? "

" Many are in denial about how the economy and world was a better place to live under clinton. I didn't see all of these problems with the housing market (foreclosures) at the rate we're today. He may have not been the best spouse/companion but who cares. I will take more money in my pocket, and prosperity anyday! I could care less about 200.00 rebate checks we received 6 years ago. We gave that back to President Bush with his big dividends check from the Energy Co. "
