No. 1 NCHS wins highest scoring Intercity game
NORMAL -- A lot of plays worked to perfection Friday night in the highest scoring Intercity Football Doubleheader game ever between Bloomington and Normal Community high schools. |Photo gallery Yet, one which broke down was the most pivotal in Normal Community’s 47-35 victory at Hancock Stadium. After cutting a 34-14 deficit to 34-28, Bloomington had the Ironmen at third-and-8 from their 40-yard line. NCHS quarterback Alex Buck sought to throw a quick pass to his tight end, but his intended target got hung up at the line of scrimmage. Under a heavy rush, Buck circled to his left and raced 22 yards for a first down. Fullback Joey Anderson scored from 38 yards out on the next play, and the Ironmen went on to their fourth straight win over BHS and 16th in a row overall. “There was pressure from the weak side, so I just took off and there was a lot of green out there,” Buck said. “Their defense played the receivers well. But when you play man like that on the outside, it leaves a lot of green for the quarterback to run.” BHS defensive tackle Matt Rush got a hand on Buck, but was unable to keep him from bouncing to the outside. “That’s a big play in this game,” BHS coach Rigo Schmelzer said. “I talked to Matt, and had he taken a different angle and not been quite as aggressive, when Buck spilled out he could have been there. Third and long, it would have been huge (to force a punt). That changes the complexion and then they went and scored.” NCHS, ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 6A, put the game away with a running attack which piled up 312 yards. Anderson had 129 yards on 20 carries, tailback Dan Moore added 116 in 22 attempts, and Buck had 94 on 18 carries as the Ironmen improved to 2-0 overall and in the Big 12 Conference. They flourished behind the blocking of linemen Anthony Shine, Mark Steadman, Derek Logue, Billy Dickson and Zach Liming and tight end Austin Kull. “They were just phenomenal,” said Anderson, who also had a 15-yard TD run. “We were getting five-yard pushes. When running backs have five yards to look for the holes, it’s not that difficult to do.” The Ironmen also got a boost early from their special teams. After fifth-ranked BHS (1-1, 1-1) took a 7-0 lead on a 27-yard TD run by junior tailback Darrelynn Dunn, NCHS’ Chad Hinshaw returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a touchdown. Moments later, Hinshaw returned a punt 64 yards to the BHS 2, setting up a 1-yard scoring run by Moore. “Chad Hinshaw is my favorite person,” said Anderson, son of BHS assistant coach Don Anderson. “He lifts us up. He gets us the momentum, and momentum in a football game is everything.” NCHS built a 21-7 lead in the second quarter, but a 1-yard Marcus Johnson TD run pulled BHS within 21-14 at the half. The Ironmen took advantage of two BHS fumbles early in the third quarter to go up 34-14. That is when momentum shifted to the Purple Raiders, who scored quickly on a one-handed 20-yard touchdown grab by Eric Furler and a 34-yard TD run by quarterback Levi Johnson. Buck’s scramble seized the momentum back and the defending 6A champion Ironmen kept it. The combined 82 points easily surpassed the most by BHS and NCHS since the Intercity Doubleheader began in 1974. The previous high was 62 in 1990 (a 56-6 BHS win). “I thought our guys really competed tonight,” NCHS coach Hud Venerable said. “I can’t be any prouder of them. There is so much pride and heart on this team.” NCHS completed its only pass for 12 yards to finish with 324 yards of offense. BHS had 314, led by 91 yards on 13 carries from Dunn. Levi Johnson ran for 67 yards and passed for 135. “I never would have guessed 47 points against us,” Schmelzer said. “They’re probably saying the same thing about 35. My kids fought hard to come back, but there were too many errors.” Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
