Artist's chair to be auctioned for Pontiac library
PONTIAC — Sue Panno’s favorite chair is the one with the line of ballerina dolls crafted on the wooden supports. She said that it has a sense of femininity, and she appreciates that since she lives in a house full of men. However, Panno has a few favorites among the 52 artistic chairs that have been donated to the Pontiac Public Library. There are chairs made out of suitcases, hockey sticks, tennis rackets and baseball bats. There are chairs decorated to remind people of the sea, beach, school and the outdoors. There are even chairs that make noise and light up. “What a gift,” said Panno, a library trustee. “Their gift … is just amazing and they are great supporters.” The chairs were created by local artist joanE Lipinski and her husband Ed, who did most of the woodworking. The chairs, currently on display at the library, will be auctioned this month with proceeds earmarked toward the library’s “Movin’ On Up,” renovation project. Lipinski said she was inspired by a National Public Radio venture to broadcasting things, such as a play, on a weekly basis. She took it upon herself to create one chair each week, starting in January. She became so involved in the project that she completed all 52 in June. Lipinski is an avid believer in recycling. That belief also became part of her inspiration, as she used donated or castaway chairs. In fact, some items incorporated into the chair art were from her own personal collection of things she can’t bear to throw away since she believes everything may someday have an artistic use. Originally, she thought she might even return her redesigned chairs to the curb, to be picked up by others. “I think the initial plan was to put them by our curb and see who comes and picks them up,” she said. “That kind of upset a few people thinking that they should have some other kind of value.” But instead she opted to use them as a fundraiser for the library, “just for the fact that we appreciate what the library does for the community.” The money raised will be used toward the library’s remodeling project. It includes expanding and moving the children’s area to the second floor, which then allows the first-floor adult and computer areas to also be expanded. The overall cost of the project is estimated at $1 million; so far the library has raised about $700,000. The chairs will remain on display in the library until Sept. 11, when the silent auction concludes. People interested in bidding on the chairs can register for a bid number on the first floor before placing a bid upstairs. Some chairs are already going for more than $100. |
