CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. -- A small, single-engine aircraft crashed into a wooded area in this northwest suburb Monday, killing the two men on board, officials said.

The small aircraft had just taken off from the Lake in the Hills Airport when it went down, said Tony Molinaro of the Federal Aviation Administration.

He said there were two people on board the Yakovlev 52. He did not know their names or where their flight was headed.

The plane’s registered owner is Yak in Flight LLC in Wilmington, Del., according to an FAA Web site that lists plane ownership by tail number. A telephone listing could not be found for the company.

Officials said the plane went down around 2 p.m. near Ackman and Randall roads on land owned by the McHenry County Conservation District.

Witnesses reported the pilot made a hard left turn before crashing, officials said.

Crystal Lake is 50 miles northwest of Chicago.
