We can all do our part to clean up litter, recycle
Advertisement

Recently my husband and I returned to Bloomington via Ireland Grove Road. From my passenger's vantage point, I could see litter on both sides of the roadside from the Towanda-Barnes Road to Streid Drive.

Later that afternoon, we both returned to Ireland Grove Road with huge leaf bags and collected refuse for three-tenths of a mile each direction. After a half-hour's work, we had collected two leaf bags nearly filled with trash - Styrofoam fragments, aluminum beer and soft drink cans, plastic bottles, cigarette packages, hubcap parts and cardboard boxes.

When I take a walk in my east Bloomington neighborhood, I sometimes carry a plastic grocery bag. Often I get home with a bag full of garbage similar to our Ireland Grove ``find.''

I am appalled by this litter attitude and eyesore. Lady Bird Johnson died last month, but we still have every reason to take pride in our public places and to make America beautiful!

There is an easy solution that costs no tax dollars. Let's clean up the mess around us. Then, let's stop the littering and start using the excellent recycling options in our community.

" go out to ireland grove rd and look at the mess along there. between people leaving baseball and soccer games, we have a golf course, subway, construction sites, homes, people going to work and home. the best thing there is the winds blows the garbage of the roads and into the ditches. i just can not belive why people can not wait till they get home or work to trash their trash. builders could weight down their building supplies and that would also help before they go home for the night. " Judy, I was wondering if this was an issue that only bothered me and SOME of the people in my neighborhood. I'm sure it is noticed and appreciated by people who drive that route. Cavewoman, I would bet there are worst offenders than construction crews - there is a constant trail of litter from the fast food/gas stations on Raab Road by Rte. 51 to Orlando St. in Normal. I don't understand why people who walk in this neighborhood every day would want to view the eyesore they create ... I walk armed with a plastic bag, too and pick up, especially glass from broken beer/booze bottles - there are a lot of children and pets in this neighborhood. Too bad these offenders aren't caught and ticketed, it would bring in a lot of revenue to the town of Normal. "

" Judy, you're a saint to pick up trash. I too am amazed at how so many people litter with out even thinking about it. I often wonder what their living quarters look like, or if they are just amoral about any one else. The police need to make examples of those by ticketing and fining those blatant offenders. It also strikes me as odd that so many smokers throw their butts out the window of their car or toss the butt on the ground before entering a building. Huge trash issue and terribly inconsiderate of others. Illinois is not your trash can. "

" are so many people slobs? Why would any reasonable person foul their own nest (i.e. their own environment)? Littering strikes me as prima facie evidence of primitiveness. "

" Judy, thanks for cleaning up after the construction workers over there who let their litter blow all over the place. They are the worst offenders. I too take walks down Ireland Grove road (even tho there is no sidewalk by my subdivision) and easily fill bags of garbage. I keep thinking of that crying Native American in those old "Don't litter" commercials. I wish we all could make him stop crying... "

" This is what I would like to see. The owners of the McDonalds..Hardees..Crispy Creams ETC. organized 'clean up' efforts for certain streets near their stores. The streets are easy to find they are one hamburger or donut away from the store. The clean up teams could even put a sign saying how the street got cleaned. That would be a real thank you from the owners for their business profits. "

" On behalf of litterbugs and inconsiderate slobs throughout the county I thank you. I also thank you for proving the point that the west side of town isn't the only place where criminals live. Littering is a crime and although unenforced is a crime none the less. Kudos for your families efforts to help keep America Beautiful but I suggest you get license numbers of cars who throw the trash and turn them in. Better yet start a web site that lists the license numbers of these offenders with a description of their vechicles. Perhaps the threat of being exposed to the police and their friends and neighbors would serve as a deterrent for them to put trash in proper recepticles. "
