Closing Maple Hill Road inconveniences travelers
Advertisement

The town of Normal did not have a public hearing or solicit any public input before they closed the north end of Maple Hill Road.

They closed it because people were using it and it would cost too much to repair/replace it. Imagine, upgrading a road that people actually use - the havoc that would ensue if the town actually observed the preferences of the public!

When I called to complain about the closure, town staff told me it would only add one minute to my commute. Now they say it adds 30 seconds. They must have found some shortcuts around Illinois State University, school zones and construction everywhere.

" So, according to "Devil's Advocate," the Mayor has a "plan to eliminate all small independent businesses from the Town of Normal." Do you mean like his own small independent business? Or like Babbitt's who they've paid tens of thousands for his relocation? Also have to take issue with those who somehow correlate the decline of Maple Hill Road with the failure of the outlet mall. MH Road was nothing more than a seldom-used local back shortcut to the mall. Forget about the back door, the outlet mall failed because they couldn't get business in the front door. "

" I used the road alot and its a shame the town of Normal would act this way. In todays world what gives city government the right to just close down a road that is used alot, just because they do not want to fix it? I'm sure they had to pump the money into their "uptown" name. "

" actually this isn't an outlet mall anymore. The current owners have decided to sell and lease store fronts in order to create a business park. Currently Afni and Chestnut Health Systems have offices there or are being created there and it looks like several other area businesses are poised to fill the remaining openings. "

" With this road closed the outlet mall may go under. I forgot the current owners were going to turn it around. "

" This is all just part of Chris Koos and Normal's plan to eliminate all small independent businesses from the Town of Normal. Remove their parking, access and affordable buildings... and then give tax breaks to millionaires and big business. Life in utopia is wonderful... NOT! "

" The arrogance of Normal officials in closing this road is similar to the stunt they pulled when they gave the parking for The NPL to the bank for a building. I guess they all want their names on the plaque for The White Elephant Motel, that Normal taxpayers have underwritten. "

" I used this road daily for five years. This road is terrible. It should have been fixed years ago along with having guard rails put on the side of the road that faces the interstate. Wouldn't take much to go off the road, expecially in winter. Many school buses take or use to take that route. That area use to not be so bad until they added on to all the apartments across from walmart. We lived on Maple Hill for 5 years until our house got broke into. So my least concern would be that the road was closed. "

Normal's goal wrote on Sep 4, 2007 3:10 PM:

" Is to wreak havoc on any existing commercial property or existing business. They said years ago; as the outlet mall was floundering; they would not fix the road and nobody cared, we just drove around the pot holes. Normal is arrogant and nobody can make suggestions to them. I wonder if the council took action to close this road or if the Administration just does as they please because they need the money for the UPtown project that is sliding into a deep money pit. "

Chapel Hill Road User wrote on Sep 4, 2007 7:40 AM:

" This is a real pain for people living and working in this area. They can repair all other areas but because they don't this road, they don't want to repair it. I thought that is why we pay taxes and high license renewal fees so they repair roads. "

" Glad to see it is closed. Some people would drive so fast on this narrow road it was ridiculous. Keeping it closed will probably save someone’s life. It was also used as a dumping ground for all of the inconsiderate people who can't seem to take their trash home to throw it away. "

" I have a solution. Let's make it a toll road. Why would anyone in this town think of making a bypass if they cannot afford to fix the roads in town? "
