Intercity girls swimming: U High to count on experience

University High School swimming coach Ryan Burroughs is not about to let low numbers deter his excitement over the new season.

“Our overall members are down this year,” he said. “But the swimmers we do have are experienced; even our younger ones have an experienced background.”

That should make the season interesting.

While swimming numbers are relatively low throughout the Intercity schools, coaches remain optimistic that talented swimmers will keep the competition level high as another season begins this week.

Defending Intercity and sectional champion U High returns nine letterwinners from last year’s squad. Kathleen Knight (100-yard breaststroke and butterfly) and Emily Hovren (200 freestyle) are the only two members of the team that participated individually in last year’s state meet.

Despite having a young roster, Burroughs remains confident in his team because of senior leadership.

“It’s terrific,” said Burroughs, who is in his eighth season. “Not only are they great swimmers in meets, but in practice. They’re a great influence on the rest of the swimmers.”

Bloomington coach Bob Loy only has three seniors on his roster, but an influx of youth has him eager to begin the season.

“We have quite a bit of depth,” said Loy, whose roster has 13 freshmen and sophomores. “Usually we haven’t had this much depth.”

Like U High and BHS, Normal Community’s roster has a plethora of youth with 17 sophomores and freshmen. But the youth is what has Ironmen coach Heather Budak enthused.

“We have a very young team and I’m excited to see how far they can come,” she said.

Normal West is dealing with a transition year as Kate Gudeman is entering her first season as head coach. But that doesn’t keep the Wildcat swimmers from looking impressive during preseason training.

“We look strong right now,” Gudeman said.

BHS hosts the Intercity meet this season, which takes place at the Robert Frank Sports Complex at 5 p.m. on Oct. 4.
