LINCOLN -- Police are investigating an accident in which a 25-year-old Lincoln man riding a bicycle was struck and killed by a car.

“At this time, we are treating it as a tragic accident,” Logan County Sheriff Steve Nichols said Tuesday.

Illinois State Police accident construction experts are investigating the accident that killed Jason Brown about 10:20 p.m. Friday.

Nichols said Brown was riding north on Nicholson Road when he was hit by a “16-year-old female driver” who was also traveling north.

The driver reportedly did not see Brown, Nichols said.

No tickets were issued to the driver.

Brown worked in maintenance for Lincoln College and also detassled corn.

" This is to everyone who didn't know Jason. He was coming home from fishing which was his pride and joy, and his bicycle was his means of transportation. So to all of you for calling him stupid for riding at night...think twice before you talk nonsense! He didn't deserve to die. Jason was his ownself. A very unique individual who did things his way. He was always ready to work and would do anything to make you just smile. Family of Ashley Taylor and Jason Brown: You're in my prayers! RIP Jason..Goin Fishin Tonight?! "

" You can throw "rules" and "laws" out all you want, but when it comes down to it you need to do what is safe. Yea, some cars do drive fast in the country and that's something you're going to have to contend with if you want to ride your bicycle out there. As for the trail, there are PLENTY of stretches with little or no traffic where you can speed along on your bike. The wise thing to do would be lobby for bike lanes on roads. I'm an avid biker myself, but I realize it's just stupid to ride out in the country and on busy roads period. I also realize that it's my responsibility to pay MORE attention since I'm riding a bike and I'm harder to see. "

" To Jason's family my heart goes out to you. I went to school with him and have fond memories. To the people that are questioning why he was riding a bike that late, maybe he was coming home from work and that was his only means of transportation. Maybe you should try having sympathy for a family that has just lost their child due to a tragic accident. And this could have been his only way home that night. Jason my your soul finally be able to rest in peace, you brighten my days back in school. And may you be an inspiration to those who knew you best, as you would have wanted it that way. You overcame many challenges and bumps in the path of life that some never thought you would make it past. May you finally be able to soar and not have to hear another comment about what they thought you couldn't overcome. "

" Having a car does NOT give anyone the right to run rough-shod over the rules of the road. If you're coming over a hill it doesn't matter if there's a cyclists, a horse, or another car- if you don't have time to stop, you're going too fast for the conditions. Where that cyclist is could be exactly where a car stopped to make a left turn is as well. The problem with this is that there are too many drivers who are just way too casual about driving, too lazy to actually know how to drive, and too arrogant to pay attention. Just like there are bike riders who are too stupid to stay in thier lane, signal turns, and stop at stop signs. But that doesn't excuse the morons who throw stuff at cyclists (I didn't need your french fries nor the water ballon that almost put my bike down), who make right turns from the left of a cyclist, and who blow stop signs because they beleive they have right-of-way over cyclists. I don't know about this accident in Lincoln so we've gone way beyond this particular story. "

" Every time someone wants to ride their bike on a country road you are taking you life in your own hands, cars are going at least 55 MPH most of them going a lot faster, if you come over a hill and see a bike it might be to late to try and stop or avoid them, most of the one I pass have no common sense and they are riding in the middle of the road. I would have to agree stay off of the country roads!!!!!!! "

" To stretch I belive you need to understand that cyclist have the same rights to be on the road as automobiles! There was a law recently passed conerning the distance between a car and a bicycle. Also, I'm thinking that you need to realize that a life was lost here and get off of your high horse. Maybe you need to stay off of the country roads. Who needs people out on the road with an attitude like yours. I pray for all the families involved. "

" I get tired of seeing B/N cyclists riding out in the county. They are a problem. When you are going 55 and have an oncoming vehicle, suddenly there is cyclist in the way. Stay in B/N and ride, we don't want to see your spandex on the county roads! "

" The road that Jason was on, Nicholson Road, leads to subdivisions outside of town and there is no "trail" for him to ride on. This road goes out far enough to include an overpass since the subdivisions are on the other side of 55. Pretty much, it's a country road with minimal space on the other side of the white line. Jason never got his driver's license so he only had his bike as a means of transportation, and that is why he was on his bike in that area at that time of night. My sympathy for Julie, Gus, Jeremy, Gina and Jonathan and also for the young driver. I'll keep you in my prayers. "

" You beat me to it...said everything I would've said. Let's also not forget the people (kids AND adults both) who get off their bike and leave their bike on the trail while they grab water or whatever. I might also add the ConstTrail is filthy. The parks & rec depts of both Blm & Normal need to clean it up. An every day or every other day cleaning of it would be wonderful!! "

" My daughter goes to school with the driver of the vehicle and the girl was brave enough to attend school yesterday. Of course, the kids at school are saying horrible things to this poor girl. She is not a murderer. Please, parents talk to your children, this was a horrible accident and it is one that this young girl is going to have to live with for the rest of her life. My thoughts and prayers are with both families trying to cope with this tragedy. "

" To Common Sense- Sorry, but I find the Constitution Trail the least safe place I ride. Now, I don't ride on Vets and there are several high-traffic areas I avoid, but the advantage of the street over the trail is that traffic rules are enforced to an extent on the street. MOST drivers stay on their side, stop at stop signs, etc. On the trail it's as if there are no rules nor civility. Unsupervised children careening side-to-side while their parents gather in large groups to stop and talk, dogs with a 20' lead on a 12' wide trail, runners and skater with their I-pod 'phones cranked to the point I can hear them, so obviously they can't hear anything around them... But if a cyclist is going to operate after dark they're stupid to depend on the CPSC's useless reflectors. Get a real headlamp that throws light out front, and at least a good sized red refelctor in the back that's aimed to be seen from the rear. And ride like a car- stay in your lane, signal, stop, and PAY FREAKIN' ATTENTION! "

" I feel really bad that this guy got killed and I bet the young driver does too... but lets use some common sense here.. What is someone doing riding a bike at 10:20 pm? It's hard enough to see bicyclists during the day. I love riding my bike but I keep it on the trail and off the road. I notice a lot of cyclists out on Towanda Barnes and also GE Road east of TB... that's just not a wise place to ride. "
