Students return to Dwight H.S. with more security
DWIGHT — People at Dwight schools worked to get back to normal Thursday, the day after a bomb threat was found at the high school, but parents and residents still had questions. | Photo gallery | Video “We are getting back to normal today, tomorrow and hereafter,” said school Superintendent Dale Adams. “Students are extremely resilient, and the staff is outstanding.” A strong police presence was at the school and will continue until today when school and public safety officials will discuss what will occur next week, Adams said. Students and staff went through backpack checks when they entered the building Thursday, and counselors were brought in to people upset by what happened Wednesday. Initially everyone returned to the last classroom they were in on Wednesday to get their books, then they attended a schoolwide assembly before returning to their regular classes about 9:30 a.m. School and police officials also met with parents and concerned citizens in morning and evening meetings at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church’s parish hall. The adults wanted to know what happened, what the school did about it and whether security measures should be changed. However, the parents all did seem to share the same thoughts concerning one thing: “Thank God they’re safe,” said Chris Bissey of Odell, who has two children at the school. “I am always happy as long as they are safe.” A 15-year-old Dwight Township High School student was charged Thursday with making a false terrorist threat and disorderly conduct. He is accused of leaving a joking bomb threat that was discovered about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, triggering a daylong evacuation at his school and a lockdown at the district’s other schools. Police with dogs searched the high school but found nothing suspicious. “We didn’t even find cigarettes in their lockers,” Adams told parents at the evening meeting. The topic of the student accused of making the threat came up at the evening meeting, and everyone seemed supportive of him. “I’ve told the students that we all have made mistakes and we don’t need 300 or more people to make fun of the mistakes that we have made,” Dwight Police Chief Tim Henson said. “I really don’t think he had any idea of how many people would be affected by this,” Bissey said. “He needs some help and he will still have our support.” Adams said some students at the morning assembly asked about the incident and others wanted to know if teachers would understand if homework wasn’t done because they didn’t have their books. At the 10 a.m. meeting for parents, Adams discussed the importance of parents keeping emergency contact information filed with the school up to date. A few parents chose to take their elementary students home early on Wednesday, and were allowed to do so if they had proper identification. High school students were evacuated to the parish hall Wednesday, and each was released only to a parent or person on the emergency contact list. “I apologize to people who were inconvenienced. But they (students) all got home safely,” he said. In the 6 p.m. session, questions ranged from whether students should be allowed to have backpacks and purses in classrooms to whether video surveillance is an option. Parents also wondered if police would be on campus on Sept. 11. One parent, a Pontiac woman with children at both Dwight and Pontiac township high schools, said she was shocked when she heard about the events at the high school, and it reminded her of a conversation she had with her daughter. They had talked about the Aug. 28 incident in which guns were found at the Pontiac school, disrupting what police said was a planned gun sale. “I remember her saying ‘Thank God I don’t go to Pontiac high school,’ and I said that things like this could happen anywhere,” Candi Cain said. “I was just in shock when this happened.” |
