Men to be tried together in robbery case

BLOOMINGTON -- Two men accused of robbing a man who got into a car in hopes of purchasing drugs will be tried together, according to a court ruling Thursday.

Charles Price, 23, and Scott Olson, 22, stood together in front of Judge Kevin Fitzgerald as their attorneys argued that a joint trial was not the best option. The motion to hold one trial was filed by the state.

The two Normal men are accused of robbing an acquaintance who thought he would be able to buy drugs when he entered a car with them July 14. The victim told police Price demanded his money and threatened him with a gun after saying “don’t make me squeeze this” while Olsen locked the car doors, according to police reports.

Price and Olsen each face charges of armed robbery and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number. Price also is charged with possession of a controlled substance and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Assistant State’s Attorney Jane Foster said the two defendants should face the same jury because they worked together to commit the crime.

“They acted together as a team to commit these offenses,” said Foster.

Foster said a woman who drove the two to several local bars before the incident will testify that she saw a gun passed between Price and Olson during the evening.

Olson’s lawyer, Brian McEldowney, argued that separate trials are necessary because the men have antagonistic defenses.

“The evidence will show that Charles Price committed the offense,” he said.

Price’s attorney did not agree that a conspiracy existed. “The only plan they had was to go drinking together,” he said in his opposition to the motion to merge the trials.

If convicted on the armed robbery counts, the men could face six to 30 years in prison.

A final pretrial hearing is set for Oct. 4 for Price and Olson.

" just funny! What is NOT funny is the ignorance and stupidity of druggies who will do anything to get their junk. Worse than that is the ignorance and stupidity of people who DO drugs!! We are becoming a nation of junkies and idiots and at a very fast pace. "
