U High wins 11th straight Intercity girls golf title
NORMAL — There was a breeze blowing at the ISU Golf Course on Wednesday afternoon. Cal Hubbard wasn’t playing, so the University High School girls golf coach didn’t mind it one bit. | Photo gallery And if there is rain in Saturday’s forecast, he’ll take that, too. Standout freshman Lauren English fired a 2-over-par 74 to edge teammate Chelsea Harris by a stroke in leading U High to its 11th straight Intercity Tournament title. The Pioneers’ 309 total bettered their own 2005 tourney record by a stroke and gave them a 38-shot victory over Normal Community. But after firing a school-record 293 earlier in the season, two-time defending state champion U High has set the bar high. “Any time you come up with some kind of (weather) element it affects kids with distances,” said Hubbard. “The wind was kind of swirling and you couldn’t figure it out … This was the first time we faced wind, and we may have it on Saturday (at the Normal Community Invitational) and some rain.” U High’s Cheryl Liang and NCHS’ Brittany Boon tied for third individually with 79s, while the Pioneers’ Kaitlyn Wampler was fifth with 81. Central Catholic and Bloomington tied for third in the team standings at 400, followed by Normal West (406). English continued her stellar play this season. She pitched within 2 feet on the par-5 18th for a birdie and medalist honors. “It felt good to make a birdie finally. I made a kick-in birdie on No. 9,” said English. “I had so many opportunities, but I couldn’t putt. I was hitting it good, everything right at the flag, but I couldn’t putt.” After playing numerous national junior tournaments, English is finding team golf an enjoyable experience. “We get along really well,” she said. “It’s fun playing with people who are good and know the rules of golf.” The four U High seniors haven’t minded a freshman jumping to the top of the lineup. “She’s awesome. I knew she was going to be good,” said Harris. “A lot of times you find when players are really good, they don’t have a personality. She’s one of my good friends, and she’s a freshman. She has a great personality and is definitely a good addition to the team personality-wise and game-wise.” Harris recovered from a double bogey on the par-5 No. 2 with a chip-in for birdie on the next hole. “We’re all trying really hard. We’re under a lot of pressure right now knowing our position and our expectations,” said Harris. “We’re doing a good job holding our composure and just playing golf. If we all have a good day, it’s just going to be amazing.” Janelle Galloway’s 83 would have welcomed by any of the other teams, but U High didn’t need it Wednesday. The Pioneers’ other player, sophomore Jenna Wampler, suffered an ankle injury in a club soccer tournament Sunday and rode on a cart with Hubbard. Like U High, NCHS was playing its third 18-hole round at ISU in the last six days. NCHS coach Addie Ince was relieved to see Boon break 80 for the first time this season. “Once you break it, I think she’ll have several here at the end of the year where she’ll break 80,” said Ince. While Ince would have liked to be closer to U High, the Ironmen are trying to peak for the regional and sectional tournaments. “I told the girls it doesn’t do us any good to shoot the best we can shoot,” she said. “We need to do that at the beginning of October.” Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
