High school notes: Mount Carmel on Saints' schedule

The Central Catholic High School football team has filled the one-game void in its schedule for the next two years. The Saints will play Mount Carmel in Week 4 in a home-and-home series beginning next year in the southeastern Illinois community.

The Golden Aces had previously faced Corn Belt member Rantoul in their opening game.

Combined, the Saints and Golden Eagles have won four state titles — three for Central Catholic and one for Mount Carmel — and appeared in the state championship game nine times.

Current Illinois State quarterback Luke Drone led Mount Carmel to back-to-back state runner-up finishes in 2001 and 2002.

HOIC schools team up for Fragile X

Five Heart of Illinois Conference football teams have joined forces to go door-to-door in their communities to raise money and awareness for Fragile X Syndrome, the most common inherited cause of mental impairment. It is also the most common known cause of autism and it affects one in 4,000 males and one in 6,000 females.

LeRoy coach B.J. Zeleznik, whose 2-year-old son Abe has Fragile X Syndrome, said Fisher and Lexington’s teams have already combined to raise more than $2,100.

Teams from Tri-Valley and GCMS also will join the cause this season. LeRoy’s players plan to go door-to-door from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19.

“We’re fortunate other schools in the conference have agreed to help out as well,” Zeleznik said. “It says a lot for teenagers and athletic programs and the good they can do.”

Game goes to dogs

As the Pontiac High School football team was cruising to a 41-8 victory over Prairie Central on Friday night, another breed was marching down the track at Williamson Field. During the second quarter of the game in Pontiac, the Livingston County Humane Society showcased five dogs that are up for adoption to the Indian crowd.

“We bring out a few animals each game,” said Nete Traugott-Olsen, a volunteer with the humane society. “It makes the community aware of the animals.”

The humane society brings out several dogs or cats at each game. Traugott-Olsen said the community has been very receptive to the unusual pageant.

-- In Tuscola’s 24-14 victory at Tolono Unity, Michigan-bound quarterback John Weinke cemented the victory with a 67-yard touchdown run with 3 minutes, 51 seconds left in the game on third down.

" has not lost a regular season conference game since Week 8 of the 2001 season. 5 seasons x 7 games = 35 wins..plus the one they got last weekend = 36 in a row. Their last loss to a conference foe was Jacksonville in the 2004 playoffs. The 26 in the SJ-R had to be a typo... "
