Junior writes book on Iraq and PTSD

DeKALB — Northern Illinois University junior Ilona Meagher has become a leading voice for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and has published a new book about the topic.

“Moving a Nation to Care: Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and America’s Returning Troops” was inspired by a 2005 article Meagher read about an Iraq war veteran who committed suicide after receiving a medal.

“I wanted to know what happened to him, so I started digging,” Meagher said. “And I wondered how much this was going on. I realized that PTSD affects not only soldiers but also their families, employers, churches and communities.”

More freshmen enrolled this fall

MACOMB — The number of new freshmen enrolling at Western Illinois University for the fall 2007 semester increased, while enrollment was unchanged at WIU’s Quad City campus, according to 10-day enrollment reports.

The number of new freshmen this fall is 1,957 compared to 1,922 in fall 2006 and 1,816 in fall 2005. New transfer student enrollment stands at 1,247 for fall 2007 compared to 1,423 for fall 2006.

Western Illinois University-Quad Cities enrollment for this semester is 1,331 students, the same as the previous year. The fall 2007 student headcount of 11,219 at the Macomb campus is down from 11,368 in fall 2006. The decline ends a run of 11 consecutive years of increases on the Macomb campus.

“We are encouraged by a larger class of new freshmen in Macomb than last year, but could not overcome the decline in transfer students and lower enrollment in extension courses,” WIU President Al Goldfarb said.

Latino events set for this month, October

CHARLESTON — Latino Heritage Celebration activities at Eastern Illinois University will take place during the months of September and October, with the major event — the annual Latino Heritage Banquet — set for Sept. 23.

With its theme “Orgullo Latino: Latino Pride,” this year’s celebration lineup includes music and movies, lectures and other events.

“We look forward to this year’s celebration,” said Juanita Cross, planning committee chairwoman. “Latino Heritage Month is an opportunity to increase awareness and appreciation for the Latino roots of our nation among the EIU and local Central Illinois communities at large.”

Admission to all events, with the exception of the banquet, is free.

Michele Steinbacher of the Pantagraph, Dana Herra of The Daily Chronicle, the Journal Gazette and Times-Courier and Western Illinois University contributed to this report.
