PONTIAC — The United Way of Pontiac is set to have its campaign kickoff breakfast Tuesday at the Pontiac Elks Lodge.

The breakfast will be by invitation only and will feature guest speaker Bruce Herron, a retired Chicago Bears football player.

The goal for the 2007-08 campaign will be $202,000. Bert Harms, United Way of Pontiac president, said that is attainable.

“We have everything in place and are ready to begin our new campaign,” she said. “I am confident that with the hard work of our board of directors and volunteers, our agencies will see their programs funded.”

The United Way will help fund 17 organizations in this campaign.

Livingston Manor — Livingston Manor is accepting registrations for a craft show and silent auction on Oct. 13. Booth space will cost $15 for a 10-by-10-foot area. For a registration form, call (815) 844-5121.

Results jump — A significant jump in ACT test scores over five years was reported by Streator High School Superintendent Stephen Swanson.

The composite score of 20.2, which is up from last’s 18.7, indicates the school is doing a better job of preparing its students, he said.

Cruise Night figures — About 20,000 people were in downtown Streator for the annual car show over Labor Day weekend, a record figure.

About 460 vehicles were registered for Cruise Night, and the event went without incident, organizers said. Pontiac also will have its last Cruise Night of the season on Sept. 15 in the downtown area.

Another TIF — The Streator City Council may consider a third tax increment financing district for the city.

TIF districts divert property tax money into a special fund to pay for infrastructure work or incentives for businesses.

The two current TIF districts are on the north end of the city and downtown. The third district would be along North Bloomington Street.

" The story said, "The breakfast will be by invitation only and will feature guest speaker Bruce Herron, a retired Chicago Bears football player." Just another example of the muckety-mucks having a good time. I'd feel better if the needy folks never got invited to the kickoff breakfasts and lunches. "
