Ex-cop wins fight against jail time

OTTAWA — A former Streator police officer facing revocation of probation on a drug conviction has won his fight to not go to prison.

Michael Dunning, 56, an officer for nine years until 1992, faced up to seven years in prison if the revocation motion had prevailed. He was convicted in 2005 of cocaine possession and has a few months left on probation.

Police raided his home in February and said they found numerous rounds of ammunition, something Dunning is prohibited from possession as a felon. LaSalle County Judge H. Chris Ryan ruled the state did not prove Dunning had access to the ammunition.

His wife, April, testified she brought the ammunition from a relative’s home and kept it in her bedroom, which her husband did not use.
