5 years ago (2002): Former Illinois State standout pitcher Eric Eckenstahler made his major league debut for the Detroit Tigers. The 6-foot-7 left-hander pitched two innings in relief against the Minnesota Twins, not allowing a run while giving up one hit and striking out four. Minnesota won, 11-4.
15 years ago (1992): If you polled the 40 participating managers to pick a favorite in this week’s ASA Men’s Major Fastpitch National Tournament at Bloomington’s O’Neil Park, most of the ballots would come back marked National Health Care Discount of Sioux City, Iowa, or Guanella Brothers from Rohnert Park, Calif.
25 years ago (1982): Dave Schilkoski led Central Catholic with 95 yards including touchdown runs of 56 and 23 yards as the Saints beat University High, 32-16, in the Intercity Football Double-Header. Normal Community jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead and hung on to beat Bloomington 27-14 in the second game.
50 years ago (1957): With WJBC sportscaster Don McKeller at the microphone, each of the six Bloomington-Normal football coaches had an opportunity to shed some tears at the young Men’s Club’s annual “Crying Towel” at the Illinois Hotel. All promised to show up for all of their games, however.
