20 percent hike sought in Streator water rate
STREATOR — A 20 percent increase in the water rate for Streator households is being sought by Illinois American Water Co., a private company that supplies water to the area. The last increase was four years ago. The rate must be approved by the Illinois Commerce Commission and usually takes about 11 months of review. The rate would add $5.62 to the average customer’s monthly bill. It is needed to pay rising costs and more than $16 million in infrastructure work since the last rate increase. Beside routine water main work, the company has installed a 5.5 million-gallon storage facility on the west side, costing $1 million. The actual request will be 17.3 percent over the current rate, along with infrastructure work costs, bringing the request to 20 percent. “That doesn’t mean that’s what we’re going to get, but that is what we’re asking for,” said Dave Clifton, operations manger for the company’s Streator facility. A letter will be sent to customers to explain the request, he said. The company also is seeking a 20 percent increase in its water rate for Pontiac. Both cities draw their water from the Vermilion River. A large project is under way to provide water to some rural customers who must now depend on water from wells that are running dry or have a foul odor. |
