Eureka planning sesquicentennial events
EUREKA – Eureka will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its incorporation in 2009 with a three-day party.
A committee of about 25 community leaders has discussed preliminary plans for a July 2-4 sesquicentennial celebration.
“I’m confident that the City of Eureka will see the biggest and best birthday party they’ve ever seen in 2009,” said Mayor Scott Punke on Tuesday.
The committee will develop an organizational structure to plan events for the party. Ideas include a carnival, parade, arts and craft booths, food, entertainment, historical book, and a pageant. A few subcommittees will deal with fundraising, marketing and advertising, volunteers and logistics.
Nancy Scott, director of Eureka Public Library and a member of the Lilac Festival planning committee, said advance work is important to make the event a success.
“We’re not going to do this again in 2010, so we want to do it right in 2009,” said Scott.
Community members with interest in any of the areas can volunteer by calling (309) 467-2113.
“We need as many people involved as we can get involved,” said Punke. “We need that to happen to be successful.”
