Food supplies scarce at shelter BLOOMINGTON — Another surge in the demand for food at Home Sweet Home Ministries is squeezing dwindling supplies of food. From Sept. 1 through the Sept. 17, the shelter served 3,253 meals and sack lunches. That was 602 meals more than the same period last month. The greatest need now is meat: chicken of any type; roast beef; ground beef; and pork of any type. The ministry also is running low on specific food items such as cream soups; ketchup; mayonnaise; sliced cheese; individual bags of chips for sack lunches; boxed potatoes; coffee; creamer; paper towels; and lunch meat. Men’s and women’s deodorant; baby wipes; diaper cream; diapers sizes 4, 5 and 6; and shaving razors also are needed. Donations can be dropped off at the Billy Shelper Center, 303 E. Oakland Ave., Bloomington, 14 hours per day, seven days per week. For questions, call (309) 834-4746. Judge to teach on court system BLOOMINGTON — Information on how the criminal justice system works will be the topic tonight for the People’s Law School. Judge Robert Freitag will present an overview of the criminal justice system at the 7 p.m. event at Heartland Community College’s Community Commons Building, Room 1407. The People’s Law School series is sponsored by the McLean County Bar Association and the Illinois State Bar Association. The free meetings are designed to provide information on a variety of legal issues. The next People’s Law School is scheduled for Oct. 4 when local attorney Richard Manzella will discuss employment law. The 7 p.m. session will also be held in Heartland’s Community Commons. Unit 5 hiring topic of report NORMAL — Unit 5 hired a consultant in the spring to look at its teacher hiring practices after a former teacher was accused of molesting children, and it will hear that report today. The report by T.J. Wilson of Monticello-based Miller, Tracy, Braun and Wilson will be discussed at a special school board meeting at 5 p.m. at the board offices at 1809 West Hovey Ave. Superintendent Gary Niehaus said school officials will hear the report, but no action will be taken on it today. The consultant was hired as part of the district’s response after former Unit 5 elementary teacher Jon Andrew White, 26, of Normal, was charged in the spring with molesting students while teaching at schools in Urbana and Normal. |
