80-year-old man beaten after giving man ride home from bar

BLOOMINGTON — A beating victim who is about 80 years old remained in serious condition Tuesday at BroMenn Regional Medical Center, but how he suffered the injuries remained unclear.

The older man met a man in a tavern on South Main Street Sept. 8 and gave him a ride to the older man’s home in the area of Meadowbrook subdivision, a Bloomington police report said.

The older man said he remembered nothing that happened after that, but his car was missing. He recovered enough from his injuries to phone for help about 2:45 a.m. Sept. 8.

The car was found a short time later at Main Street and Woodrig Road, Bloomington.

While the police report said it appears he was beaten at his home, the man insisted he fell and doctors were unable to substantiate how the traumatic head injuries occurred.

Police said he is off a respirator and able to recognize family members.

" They drove back to the 80 year old man's place. That is where this beating took place. Then the person left with this man's car which was found by using OnStar. From what I was told the older man had not had much to drink and was not over the legal limit. "

" Maybe you should use your computer time more wisely by googling the effects of meth, pot, coke etc. I guess when you're a weed head you'd naturally think it's ok. "

I see alcohol as a big problem wrote on Sep 19, 2007 6:35 PM:

" for many folks. But I think the answer is to regulate the folks- NOT the alcohol. Afterall, many of us know how to stop at a beer or two and drive, and act responsibly. I rarely drink but like the freedom of knowing I can have a sip anytime I wish. Why should I be prohibited? "

I don't get it... wrote on Sep 19, 2007 6:32 PM:

" Did the 80 year old meet the dude at the bar and take him back to his OWN HOME (the 80 yr. old's) where the likely violence took place? Or did the older guy drive the younger dude to HIS home (the younger guy's)? The article reads one way, but folks here are posting as though they're reading it another... It's important only insofar as one way- it seems there certainly may have been a specific motive/intention, that had it happened the other way- would then be discounted all together. See what I'm getting at? "

" Am I off? Look at the true crime rates from alcohol. You will find that their are way more arrests that are singled out as alcohol related. DUI'S, Battery, Domestic Violence, Illegal Transportation, yes even manufacturing, deaths of those Innocent victims whom are injured or die, due to DUI, theft, costs to insurance company's, cost to the tax system to house alcohol related offenders. Now compare crime statistics with those you pointed out. I think about the only real crime they commit is thefts of fertilizer, and pills. Sure you want to point their faults, but take a real good look at the effects of alcohol and soon you will find that the legalization of alcohol has a detrimental effect on society, and as far as prohibition, times have changed and we now have a government that must have their hands in all our pockets so A. Capone just is not going to last in todays day in age..... Ban alcohol and free the weed....... "

" illegal substances impair your abilities just as much as alcohol does. Its called responsibility....but it sounds like this man did a nice thing and gave someone a ride home and the person ended up being a dead beat....I drink but I don't drink and drive and I don't drink to get drunk....don't point fingers its rude- didn't your mother ever teach you that! " Bonkers is possibly the friendliest, cleanest, neighborhood bar in this town. The people who frequent there will attest to that! Stop in and see for yourself, then stroll north on Main St. to the next bar, do some comparing, I guarantee you'll know where the Loosers are and you wont even have to give it a 2nd try! We all are hoping this man recovers quickly! "

" Ok, so maybe you're a little off base when it comes to the comments you make about coke and meth being less destructive, but you are right about alcohol being the gateway drug and one of the most dangerous out there. When someone shoots up meth, and they die, the only person they physically hurt is themselves. When a drunk person gets behind the wheel of a car, they have the capability to hurt and kill any number of people. Honestly, I'd rather see people stoned off legalized marijuana than drunk off alcohol; I've never heard of a man beating his wife and kids because he was stoned... "

" Will you listen to yourself? you know - alcohol is the only substance you listed which you can actually comsume responsibly and use socially- you can have A glass of wine or A beer- no heroin addict or meth user consumes the drug NOT to get high, C'mon. I'm not downplaying alcoholism or saying that drunk driving is not a problem but for crying out loud leave my wine alone!!!!!!!!!! i can have a few glasses to wash my day away and not turn around and rob my neighbor to get another bottle! "

More proof that bars... wrote on Sep 19, 2007 1:24 PM:

" and alcohol are nothing but trouble. When will we ever learn? We have thousands of people killed every year from drunk driving accidents, we have robberies, assaults of all kinds, people like this elderly man beaten half to death, etc. etc. YET, we still continue to uphold the use of alcohol and still continue to establish more and more places to buy it and to consume it. Have we all gone stupid or what? "

mrd wrote on Sep 19, 2007 12:56 PM:

" Just a guess, but some people are stubborn and prideful.. I can see someone that age not carrying about little things like being beaten up or losing a car. The newspaper IMHO should list the bar's name if only so the public can raise their awareness or perhaps phone in relevant information they may have tied to the case. Its not like the bar is accused of wrong doing. "

" Just another reason to Ban Alcohol and treat those whom consume it as the criminals that they are. Open your eye's people Alcohol is the real evil of the world far worse than coke, meth and pot combined and the effects are seen every single day yet everyone turns a blind eye to America's biggest problem Alcohol the real gateway drug. Raise taxes on alcohol to fund a program to help those who's lives are effected by Alcoholism I say a raise of 23.75% is the right thing to do........... Where are the tobacco company's suing states that are not equally enforcing equal taxation on harmful products, Time to sue and make it right.......... "
