Brief previews of Friday’s high school football games involving teams from Bloomington-Normal. Bloomington vs. Champaign CentralTime: 7 p.m. today Place: Fred Carlton Field, Bloomington Records: Champaign Central 2-2, 2-2 in Big 12 Conference; BHS 3-1, 3-1 in Big 12 FYI: Champaign lost 26-10 to Normal Community and in overtime to Normal West. BHS will be without standout tailback/safety Darrelynn Dunn for the second straight week because of a broken thumb. Receiver Tyler Sipes, linemen Chris Love and Ricky Walker, long snapper Matt Rush and center Deonte Person also are out because of injuries or illness. Quoting: “They are a team that is looking to move into the top echelon of our conference. To do that, typically you beat somebody here in town. I told our players I think they’ll view this as a playoff kind of game.” — BHS coach Rigo Schmelzer Central Catholic vs. Mahomet-SeymourTime: 7 p.m. today Place: Bill Hundman Memorial Field, Bloomington Records: Mahomet-Seymour 4-0, 3-0 in Corn Belt Conference; Central Catholic 4-0, 4-0 Radio: WJBC-AM (1230) FYI: Central is ranked No. 3 and Mahomet-Seymour No. 4 in Class 4A. The game features standout tailbacks in Mahomet-Seymour’s Andrew Brewer (700 yards, 14 TDs) and the Saints’ Ryan Waldron (459 yards, 7 TDs). A key could be Mahomet-Seymour’s ability to pressure Saints’ junior quarterback Adam Rebholz (369 yards, 7 TDs, 6 interceptions). Central junior linebacker Sean Stokes (bruised thigh) is questionable. Quoting: “Their line gets after you and knocks you around. We have to match their physical-ness, because that’s how they play. If we can, we have a chance. If we can’t, it will be a long night.” — Central coach Bobby Moews Normal Community vs. Champaign CentennialTime: 7 p.m. today Place: Tommy Stewart Field, Champaign Records: NCHS 4-0, 4-0 in Big 12 Conference; Centennial 3-1, 3-1 in Big 12 FYI: Centennial all-state tailback Mikel Leshoure sat out last week’s game at Danville with what was called a minor hamstring injury. His replacement, Rayvonte Rice, rushed for 188 yards and two TDs on 25 carries. NCHS could see both as the No. 1-ranked Ironmen seek their 19th straight victory. Quoting: “We’re just preparing to get their best. They’re always formidable. We’ve had a pretty good week of practice. The tempo has increased. I think we’re moving in the right direction.” — NCHS coach Hud Venerable Normal West vs. DanvilleTime: 7 p.m. today Place: Danville High School Records: Normal West 3-1, 3-1 in Big 12; Danville 2-2, 2-2 in Big 12 FYI: Danville posted its biggest win in years last week, downing then-No. 9-ranked Champaign Centennial, 41-34. West has won three in a row, keyed by the running of junior Darius Bell (525 yards). Danville sophomore Mario Crosby ran for 103 yards, scored two touchdowns and passed for another last week. West tackle Jonathon Aden (ankle) is out. Quoting: “They’re very physical and very fast. I’m excited about the opportunity. We’re going into a tough place to play. They have a lot of momentum coming off a big win over a team that beat us the first week. I’ve told our kids this is a pivotal game for us.” — West coach Darren Hess U High vs. Prairie CentralTime: 7 p.m. today Place: Prairie Central High School, Fairbury Records: U High 1-3, 1-3 in Corn Belt; Prairie Central 0-4, 0-3 in Corn Belt Radio: WTRX-FM (93.7) FYI: U High is coming off narrow losses to state-ranked Rochester (20-19) and Pontiac (13-10). Pioneers’ sophomore quarterback T.J. Smith (hand) is questionable. If he cannot play, junior Jake Todino will start. Also, junior running back/linebacker Will Brucker (groin) and lineman Dillon Sloneker (foot) are questionable. Prairie Central is celebrating its homecoming. Quoting: “I think our kids understand that if we keep playing well, we’re going to turn the corner and the wins are going to come. We’ve let them know we have to play with a sense of urgency if we want to get in the playoffs.” — U High coach Kurt Olson Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports.
