Local 'political neophyte' to run against Durbin

SPRINGFIELD — A State Farm Insurance Cos. employee on Monday announced a long-shot bid to unseat U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois.

Alton C. Franklin III, 52, wants to run as an independent candidate against the Senate’s second-ranking Democrat. He must collect 25,000 signatures to get on the November 2008 ballot.

Franklin, a native of South Carolina and a resident of Bloomington since 2001, acknowledged the significant odds that face him.

“I’m as much a political neophyte as you can find,” he said.

Also mulling a run against Durbin is Republican Steve Sauerberg, a physician from La Grange.

Franklin said he believes Durbin is out of touch with voters.

“I am the average citizen,” he said in an interview Monday. Previous to taking his job as a systems analyst at State Farm, Franklin said he lived in Texas.

His campaign Web site is www.alton4illinois.org.

The Durbin campaign had no comment on Franklin’s candidacy.

" To DS: WHATEVER YOU SAY....To Flounder....you should rethink your comment about anyone but Durbin...that's scary. "

" Durbin is one of the truly good men in the senate, and I for one look forward to his taking over as Senate Majority Leader in 2008. With a filibuster-proof 60 seat Democratic majority in the senate and a Democratic President, we can get down to the hard work of fixing all of the incredible damage that the Publicans did to this country (and the world) over the past 6 years. Durbin is a good American, a true patriot in every sense of the word, and one of the few reasons that I continue to have faith in the hope and promise of America. "

" What the h#!!? Durbin has to be one of the most out-of-touch politicos in DC. Did you all see his latest push? It's called the Dream Act. It would grant amnesty to anyone who entered the US illegally before they turned age 16. If someone has been here for 20 years, but came over before their 16th birthday, they can apply for this program. America already told the libs that we legitimate immigration reform, not amnesty. Since the blanket amnesty program was shot down after enough complaints were lodged, they are trying to piece-meal it. I wrote Durbin about it and received a response thanking me for writing about my concern for education funding for illegal immigrants. That's how out of touch he and his staff are! They can't even get their issues right when people try to voice their opinions! "

" Durbin is one of the best senators in office right now. He's brave and effective. It'll take a spectacular effort to unseat him. "

" Where is the meat and bones to this article. There are no facts about where he stands on any issue. How is the reader supposed to know anything about him. And what difference does it make what state your from. Typical uninformed voter. "

" Durbin is out of touch and doesn't know it. If you ask him something he will explain why he thinks that not listen to what you are saying. That makes you out of touch if you ask me. He is to represent us and change his mind accordingly or tell us what he thinks before we vote for him so we will know what he really thinks. Funny how some want us to believe one thing and tell us that then go ahead and do another after the voting is done. "
