Justice system unfair in case of Jena 6
A Justice system unfair in case of the Jena 6 Even though I am a white, 17-year-old girl and am not personally affected by this, I believe the Jena 6 were unfairly punished. Here's why: Even though what they did to Justin Baker was wrong, it seems like the justice system was unfair. The Jena 6 could be facing up to 20 years for battery for the beating. Barker was knocked unconscious, his face swollen and bloodied. But he was able to go to a school activity later in the day. The three white boys who hung nooses on a tree were only given a three-day in-school suspension, but not prosecuted. The district attorney said there was no Louisiana law to charge them with. Baloney! Racial harassment is illegal, so why didn't the D.A. charge the three white boys with that? Even though this is not taking place in my town, I feel affected by this because I live in America whre this is going on and I believe in equality and non-racial judgment. For those who say why does everything come down to race: We still have racism and unfair judgment in our country, even though most say we don't know. This is America. Whatever happened to equality for all? I believe the Jena 6 should have been punished, but not so harshly. I thank the people who marched in Jena on Sept. 20 for fighting for equality. They have my support. Roseanna Ahrens Bloomington A 5 A A CJ CJ A A A uU |
