Fox Creek Elementary earns national honor

BLOOMINGTON -- Fox Creek Elementary students gave their school a standing ovation when they learned Fox Creek was named the first Blue Ribbon school in McLean County.

“There are 90,000 schools in the nation. This is a really big deal,” said Chad Colby of the U.S. Department of Education.

Colby, Unit 5 administrators, school board members, parents and other guests congratulated Principal Mark Robinson, staff and students on the award. The designation of No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School rewards their dramatic improvements in achievement.

At an all-school assembly Friday, Colby, of Washington, D.C., told students he was excited to be back in Bloomington where he attended school and grew up.

Colby planned to visit two of his grade school teachers at Stevenson Elementary School, where he attended 30 years ago. They are both still teaching there, said Colby, who also attended Bloomington Junior High School in District 87.

“It’s a great place to grow up,” said Colby, a deputy assistant secretary for media affairs. He said Fox Creek is one of 237 schools of 90,000 in the United States to win the award.

Fox Creek Elementary School has 371 students in a diverse population. About 50 percent of students receive free and reduced-price lunches.

“It proves all students can learn, no matter their skin color or economic level,” he said.

It is what the No Child Left Behind program is all about, he said.

“This has been a week of surprises,” Robinson said. On Tuesday, kindergarten teacher Sally Cummins won $1,400 in school supplies from Office Max.

And on Thursday, the school’s Camp Read-A-Lot event was a bigger success than expected, Robinson said, with more than 250 children and parents attending. The school was still dressed up with camping displays on Friday.

“We’ve come so far in seven years,” said Robinson, who has been principal at Fox Creek, 3910 Fox Creek Road, since it opened seven years ago. He’s been with the district for 29 years.

He attributes its success to “high achievement, high expectations and relationships” fostered by parents, staff and students.

Special education teacher Karrie Reustman, who also has been at the school since it opened, agreed that it was an exciting week. “He came out with blue ribbons,” she said, describing how Robinson shared news of the award with his teachers.

" The criteria for Blue Ribbon schools are: "The program requires schools to meet either of two assessment criteria. It recognizes schools that have at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds that dramatically improve student performance in accordance with state assessment systems; and it rewards schools that score in the top 10 percent on state assessments. " Of the schools submitted by each state, at least one-third must meet the first criterion of having 40 percent of the students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The program allows both elementary and secondary schools to be recognized in the same year. Fifteen schools in Illinois were awarded Blue Ribbon status. Six were private. One high school and one middle school were included. Eleven of the schools would be from "suburban Chicago" areas. Only two downstate schools made the list- Fox Creek and Fieldcrest. More information can be found if you go to the ed.gov site for no child left behind blue ribbon schools. Google it! Way to Go teachers, staff and Mr. Robinson! "

" Congrats to you too ... but this award has NOTHING to do with the size of a town. In fact, there are several wonderful schools who will never get this award ... why? Because they have already been scoring well. This award goes to schools who show significant improvement - so the pool of eligible schools is actually less than what it seems as many schools are already performing at an excellent level. "

" Chad is our son and his years in the Bloomington/Normal school districts were wonderful and the excellent teachers he had in these early years were certainly instrumental in achieving goals later on. Congradulations to Fox Creek and especially the students who are really the stars. Chad was really excited about being a part of this special day. "

" Hey Pantagraph, did you know that FieldCrest South (in Minonk) also won this award (not bad for a town of 2500) Anyway, congradulations to ALL the schools.. "

" This is the first time that a Unit 5 school has been in the headlines as a Bloomington School! Over 50% of the children in Unit 5 have Bloomington addresses but it has been a struggle to get the city of Bloomington to recognize this. Congratulations to Fox Creek for providing a wonderful education to their students. This is a great award for a great staff and parents! "

" Way to go, students, parents, teachers, and administrators! This is a great honor for Fox Creek Elementary....that will no doubt lead to at least a few derogatory comments, thus resulting in downward-spiraling dialogue somehow relating to partisan politics. Forget all that, and celebrate! You done good. "
