EV1 clectric car should be given another chance
Advertisement

After watching the documentary ``Who Killed the Electric Car?'' I'll never purchase another General Motors product.

The EV1 was a car that was loved by those who had the privilege to drive it. The car was reportedly suitable for 90 percent of the population and recharged at the equivalent to 60-cent gas.

It was a car that was clean, durable, nearly maintenance free and with the new battery technology that was eventually developed had a range up to 160 miles between charges and lasted the life of the car.

Eleven hundred were made and leased out in California and Arizona. At the end of their lease they were all ordered returned and in time, despite strong protest, were destroyed. GM turned down an offer of $1.9 million for the last 60 or so that remained.

According to the movie, the battery technology that was eventually used in the cars was invented by a man in Michigan. GM bought controlling interest in his company which they eventually sold to, guess who, an oil company, Chevron Texaco.

The EV 1 should be brought back and the technology freed.

The blood stains of brave young American soldiers are partially on the hands of greedy corporations and the corrupt politicians from both parties they are in bed with. Using their influence, power and dirty money to bury clean, domestic technology and energy makes the world a more dangerous and deadlier place.

Where are the newspapers and the major media in owning up to their investigative First Amendment responsibilities?

Watch the documentary.

" If you go to lionev.com, you'll see the modern solution to the EV1... Lithion-ion batteries in a hyundi or ford ranger... standard range - 200 miles! They are a bit expensive... 14 grand to do the conversion of a regular ICE car, but with the price of gas and the especially the way it fluctuates during the week, hell, I'll take it! I'd pay for the conversion in a few years just by the gas I'd save! "

" Google "Electric car" or "Lithium Titanate battery" and "Fast recharge station" and you will see that the end of the era of oil monguls is over "

" Bring back the GM EV1? No. . . The EV1 and the NiMH batteries it used are already obsolete. Electric cars that greatly outperform it are coming within the next several years. "

" Thanks, William. I have to ask Beuchert how I could have watched a fictitios film? We had electric cars in the 1920's. They weighed a couple tons. In 1977, one fellow classman who had gotten his Masters in Electrical Engineering met with myself and 5 other EE majors. He was working at Ford's on their electric car project and he was totally disgusted. He said they are planning for failure and that the seven people at this table could make a practical electric vehicle. Technology has improved tremendously since 77 and New Jersean clearly points to the corporate vested interests that won't allow this technology out. It hurts oil, auto, and the pollution industries that control much of the world today. "

" The film is totally fictitioius - the EV-1 was recently named by Time as one of the worst 50 cars ever built - it never should have been built - high cost ($43,000) short range (75 to 120 miles), long recharge times (6 to8 hours) , high cost of batteries ($20,000 plus every five years). This gullible writer has been conned by Paines lying film. Is he also never going to buy a Honda or Toyota also -they both cancelled their EVs (the Toyota Rav 4 electric and the Honda EV). Ha, Ha, ha, Ha, Ha. What a boob. The Honda EV wasn't even on the market a year. Buy the new Chevy VOLT EV with range extender in 2010 - it corrects all the mistakes GM made with the EV-1. A 7 year old child could tell you why the EV-1 failed - without a practical and affordable battery, an all -electric car is not a viable alternative to a gasoline engine. "

" the film is very credible. most of which are hard facts impossible to lie(like Chevron Texaco. bought the controlling share of the battery company). the director simply string these facts together to make an appealing story. these are vast nested interest against EV. it is obvious they are working against EV. but these is higher interest, the interest of human race and the planet earth. i don't want to argue with anyone about climate change, but there are so many arguments against current oil habit, only the most selfish type of people can act on their own vested interest to protect it. " How about instead you suggest or I suggest that we all BOYCOTT CHEVRON/TEXACO whenever possible? Nime times out of ten there is another station on the next corner. Seems like a simple concept to send a message. Also please discover and do a search engine on WORLDS NEST. See the sustainable living...in the desert! Much technology is available today, but the Bush Regime & Congress works for the oil companies i.e. our presence in the Mid-East. Also do a search on the TESLA automobile. Pricey but incredable. "
