H.S. sectional golf previews
The following is a preview for Monday's and Tuesday’s high school sectional golf tournaments by class and location. CLASS 3A BOYSTODAY Pekin Sectional Where: Lick Creek Golf Course, Pekin Area team: Normal West Area individuals: Alex Burge, Bloomington; Ryan Smoot, Normal Community. Keep an eye on: Normal West, coming off the first regional title in school history, seeks the school’s first state tournament appearance. Quincy is the favorite with five golfers back from last year’s team which placed third in the Class AA State Tournament, including medalist Luke Guthrie. CLASS 2A BOYSTODAY Quincy Notre Dame Sectional Where: Westview Golf Course, Quincy Area teams: Central Catholic, Lincoln, University High Area individuals: Shawn Evans, Clinton; Jay Frietag and T.J. Tucker, Olympia; Lee Hogan and Kyle Masching, Pontiac; Seth Trolia, Mahomet-Seymour. Keep an eye on: U High, behind medalist Eric Meier and runner-up Kyle English, rolled to 26-stroke victory in the regional and appears to be peaking in its quest for a fifth straight state championship. Central Catholic and Lincoln figure to be in the hunt for the other qualifying team spot along with Quincy Notre Dame and Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin. Mendota Sectional Where: Mendota Golf Club, Mendota Area individuals: Brandon Cinotto and Josh Gass, Streator. Keep an eye on: Cinotto and Gass are trying to become the first Streator golfers to advance to the state tournament since 1997. CLASS 1A BOYSTODAY Peru St. Bede Sectional Where: Spring Creek Golf Course, Spring Valley Area team: Fieldcrest Area individuals: Jake Colmone and Jordan Knepp, El Paso-Gridley; Kyle Fellner and Andrew Wuethrich, Eureka; Jordan and Kai Pflederer, Tremont; Jacob Pratt, Ridgeview; Jordan Schreiber, Lexington. Keep an eye on: Fieldcrest seeks to advance to its first state tournament. Monmouth-Roseville and Peoria Christian have state tourney experience, while Spring Valley Hall will be playing on its home course. Pana Sectional Where: Oak Terrace Golf Course, Pana Area individuals: Brent Mason, Hartsburg-Emden/Delavan; Landon Frye, Illini Central. Keep an eye on: Mason won the Petersburg Porta Regional by shooting 79 at Shambolee Golf Course. CLASS AA GIRLSTODAY Moline Sectional Where: Oakwood Country Club, Coal Valley Area teams: Normal Community, University High Area individuals: Jenna Apple, Sarah Galloway and Alexa Tyler, Bloomington; Rachel Clark, Kelli Miller and Kaitlin Reid, Normal West; Kelsey Erickson, Mahomet-Seymour; Jackie Leonard, Streator; Amber Stephenson, Lincoln. Keep an eye on: U High is on a mission to win its third straight state championship and had five of its six golfers in the 70s in the regional, led by Kaitlyn Wampler’s 75. Normal Community probably needs to beat out Rockford Boylan and Maroa-Forsyth to grab the second team qualifying spot. Streator’s Jackie Leonard was regional medalist with a career-best 71 at Normal’s Ironwood Golf Course. CLASS A GIRLSTODAY Watseka Sectional Where: Shewami Country Club, Sheldon Area teams: Blue Ridge, Central Catholic, Dwight, Iroquois West Area individuals: Claire Chrisman and Kristen Palmer, Tri-Valley; Kelsey Day, Ridgeview; Kaylee Maiden and Alli Nixon, Clinton; Sidney Overman and Carly Wilson, GCMS; Jodi Reis, Prairie Central; Jordan Riddle, LeRoy; Marissa Wilson, PBL. Keep an eye on: Central Catholic shoots its second straight state tournament appearance. Champaign St. Thomas More is the heavy favorite. Iroquois West’s Amy Keigher advanced to last year’s state tourney as an individual. Camp Point Central Sectional Where: Arrowhead Golf Course, Camp Point Area individuals: Peri Hartman and Derah Hohulin, Eureka; Chelsea Sherman, Olympia. TUESDAY Byron Sectional Where: Prairieview Golf Course, Byron Area teams: El Paso-Gridley Area individuals: Heather Flanigan and Olivia Nenne, Fieldcrest. Keep an eye on: El Paso-Gridley earned its first regional title, led by medalist Jessica Knepp, and is the only team coming into the sectional which broke 400 in the regional. Other regional champions are host Byron and Westmont. Note: The top two teams and low eight individuals and ties not on qualifying teams advance to the state tournament.
