5 years ago (2002): Jim Baker, the only varsity head football coach in Normal West’s eight-year history, said he will resign that post at the end of the season. Central Catholic sophomore Pat Sprague was medalist but University High won the El Paso Class A Golf Regional; Nick Bova led Bloomington to the Peoria Class AA title.
15 years ago (1992): Bloomington won the Intercity Swim Meet for the 10th straight year by beating University High, 64-29, and Normal Community, 62-31, under the double-dual scoring format. Leading the Raiders was junior Ruth Owens, who had top times in the 200-yad individual medley and 100 breaststroke.
25 years ago (1982): A one-yard touchdown run by halfback Joe Segobiano on a fourth-down play in the second overtime gave Bloomington an 8-0 victory over Champaign Central after Bloomington’s stout defense had limited hard-charging Central to 23 yards rushing on 25 carries.
50 years ago (1957): Former Major League baseball pitcher Emil “Dutch” Leonard of Springfield will be he guest speaker at an American Legion banquet planned for Oct. 22 at the McBarnes building. Leonard had a long and brilliant career with Brooklyn, Washington and the Chicago Cubs.
