Tremont's Thompson, Eureka's Klaus grab cross country titles
AMBOY — Heat usually affects distance runners adversely, but Tremont High School junior Parker Thompson and Eureka senior Olivia Klaus appeared impervious to 85-degree conditions Monday at the 35th annual Amboy Invitational cross country meet.
Thompson became the fourth two-time champion in meet history by touring the 2.9-mile course in 14 minutes, 38 seconds. Only five others, all of whom won state titles, were faster in meet history.
“(The heat) zapped a lot of energy out of people. I have a theory that is how the sun gets its energy, it sucks it out of people,” quipped Thompson, who won last year in 14:46.
Thompson finished 11 seconds ahead of runner-up Colin Mickow of Princeton. Fieldcrest’s Brian Peterson ran fourth in 14:52.
Klaus, who was second a year ago in 17:17, won in 17:33 to help her No. 3-state ranked team place second in a field of 35 with 116 points. No. 1 Winnebago won with 71. No. 8 Tremont, led by Katie Imig (14th, 18:50), took fourth with 144.
“It was too hot so I just kind of coasted,” said Klaus, who won by 30 seconds over runner-up Lauren Sible of Bryon.
Other Eureka scorers were Bonnie Martin (21st, 19:10), Deidra Klaus (31st, 19:28), Laura Magnuson (34th, 19:38) and Stephanie Fellner (41st, 19:52).
In the boys division, unranked Delavan, which co-ops with Hartsburg-Emden and Midwest Central, took second (101) to finish ahead of four teams ranked in the state’s top 12. No. 1 Winnebago won with 57.
