ISU to induct four into Redbird Athletics Hall of Fame
NORMAL -- The Illinois State Department of Athletics will induct four individuals into its Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday. The 2007 class includes former student-athletes Frank Purdy (men’s tennis, 1951-54), Jackie Ryan-Beck (women’s golf, 1982-85) and Galen Scott (football, 1997-2000), as well as longtime supporter and game-day volunteer Jan Johnson, who will receive the Campbell “Stretch” Miller award. The ceremony will be at 8 a.m. Saturday in the Prairie Room of the Bone Student Center. Here is a look at the four inductees: -- Frank Purdy: During his four seasons at ISU, the Redbirds won four straight Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) championships, and the Redbirds went undefeated in IIAC match play. In 1954, he captured the No. 1 singles championship and was a three-time champion at No. 1 doubles, teaming with John Holcomb. In 1953, he led the Redbirds to their first NAIA district and national tournaments in school history. -- Jackie Ryan-Beck: Ryan-Beck led ISU to the 1983 and 1985 Gateway Conference championships. … In 1983, the Redbirds earned their first NCAA Tournament bid in school history. She was named to the six-member Gateway Conference All-Decade Golf Team in 1992. -- Galen Scott: A three-time all-American and four-time all-conference selection. Scott still ranks second at ISU in career tackles with 579 and owns the school record for tackles in a game (27 versus Southern Utah in 1998) and tackles in a season (186 in 1998). Scott is currently defensive coordinator for the ISU football team. -- Jan Johnson: An Illinois State alum, Johnson serves on the official game-day crew for four Redbird athletic teams. She began volunteering with ISU athletics in 1984, when she served as a line judge at Redbird volleyball matches. She later became a member of the volleyball bench crew and has been a member ever since. She also serves as official scorer for ISU women’s basketball. The Pontiac native worked at ISU for the past 25 years. Get area high school sports scores and statistics at Varsity Sports. |
