U High girls golf shoots through sectional with ease

COAL VALLEY — While the wind shifted directions during Monday’s Class AA Girls Golf Sectional at Oakwood Country Club, University High School wasn’t fazed.

U High remained on track to defend its state title by breezing past the field, shooting 307 to beat runner-up Rockford Boylan by 42 strokes.

Both teams advanced to this weekend’s state tournament at Hickory Ridge Golf Course in Carbondale. Normal Community was fourth at 363.

“It was really a tough day for all the players,” said U High coach Cal Hubbard. “The wind changed three different directions, the greens were quick and the balls were bouncing all day. A 307 on this course today is a good score.”

U High senior Kaitlyn Wampler earned medalist honors by shooting an even-par 71. Streator’s Jackie Leonard qualified as an individual by tying U High freshman Lauren English for second with 77s. Normal Community’s Brittany Boon fired 87 and missed advancing by a stroke.

Another U High golfer, Janelle Galloway, tied for third with a 79, while Cheryl Liang also counted for the Pioneers with an 80. Other U High golfers were Chelsea Harris (83) and Jenna Wampler (86).

“We have four seniors on this two-time defending state championship team, but I know any of our six are able to put up winning scores,” said Hubbard.

Kaitlyn Wampler said the way Mother Nature hammered the golfers made her success Monday that much more special.

“These conditions were really tough,” she said. “Finishing par under these conditions leaves me really happy. It wasn’t easy today. I had to battle throughout.”

English was humble about her sectional success and advance to state.

“I played well today,” she said. “I haven’t been playing that great lately, so today was a nice change. I double-bogeyed hole 17 and then bogeyed hole 18 so, considering the way I ended, I am happy with my day.”

Other counting scores for NCHS were by Allison Schultz (88), Dani Hopkins (88) and Lauren Hunt (100).

“It was a rough day. If you look at the scores, all the scores were inflated evenly,” said NCHS coach Addie Ince. “U High had higher scores, and we had higher scores. It’s not like we played particularly bad.”
