BLOOMINGTON -- Illinois Wesleyan University and Eureka College both plan their homecoming celebrations on the heels of this week’s celebration at Illinois State University.

The Titans at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington celebrate the week of Oct. 15; with the men’s football team facing the Elmhurst College Bluejays at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 20 at Wilder Field.

Unique to this year’s IWU events, homecoming attendees will have the chance to sign two 13-foot steel beams painted in school colors. The beams will be used as part of a support system for the roof of the campus’ welcome center, named in honor of late president Minor Myers Jr.

The 19,000-square-foot building is scheduled to open in fall 2008. The first floor will house admissions offices, a 75-seat auditorium and a lounge featuring exhibits focusing on IWU history. Illinois Wesleyan’s career center and a large conference room will be on the second floor.

The beams will sit on the lawn of the nearby Evelyn Chapel before the homecoming football game, and remain three days. Signing times are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. President Dick Wilson will lead a ceremony about the center at 11 a.m. Oct. 20.

Homecoming also will be the vehicle for two milestone celebrations: the Acacia social fraternity is hosting a 50th anniversary reunion; and campus radio station WESN 88.1 FM will celebrate 35 years.

At 10 a.m. Oct. 19, staff and alumni of the student-run station will present “35 Years of WESN 88.1 FM: Stories, Pictures, and Sounds from the Far Left.” The talk is one of six lectures that day, part of the “Back to College” lecture series created for homecoming.

Before the Oct. 20 game, the Ryan A. Beaupre Run/Walk will start at 8 a.m. on the IWU track; the eighth annual Classic Car Show will be on the quad all morning; and a homecoming luncheon will be in Shirk Center. The run/walk honors an IWU grad who was killed in the Iraq war.

Eureka College

Just as Titan festivities wind down, Eureka College will kick off its own homecoming. Events throughout the week of Oct. 22 are tied to its “American Heroes” theme.

The Red Devils football team faces the Aurora University Spartans at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at McKinzie field, but the small private college has scheduled nearly 20 homecoming events besides the game.

A torchlight parade at 8 p.m. Oct. 24 begins at Burgess Memorial Hall and winds its way to the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity house for a bonfire. Eureka’s most famous alum, President Ronald Reagan, played on the school’s football team and was a member of that fraternity.

Also during homecoming week are intercollegiate soccer and volleyball matches, a late-night pep rally Oct. 26 at the Reagan Center, and the main homecoming parade at 10 a.m. Oct. 27 along College Avenue.
