Skateboarding accommodations to deck O’Neil Park
BLOOMINGTON — In what may have been the fastest decision it has made this year, a proposal to spend $170,000 for a skate park received the Bloomington City Council’s approval Monday. Without discussion, the council unanimously approved a recommendation by the city’s staff to go ahead with the purchase of equipment from American Ramp of Joplin, Mo. The skate park will be built at O’Neil Park. Parks and Recreation Director Dean Kohn spent about three minutes reviewing the project and Jon Perkins, a representative of the community group advocating for the skate park, had the only public comment. Between 65 and 70 skateboarders filled the council chambers. “This has been a long time coming and we just want to thank the council, Dean and the city’s staff for working with us to make this happen,” Perkins said. “We really appreciate this.” Kohn said the money will buy between 36 and 51 pieces of equipment. By setting the spending limit on the project at $170,000, Kohn said the parks department will have more flexibility in what is purchased for the park. In addition to meeting with park designers, the local skate park group was consulted on the three proposals submitted to the city for the park. Perkins said the group was very happy with how the park will be designed. Earlier, the park was among projects slated for this year that were used as examples of expenses that could be delayed to help close a $2 million gap in the city’s next fiscal year budget. In related budget business, the council discussed staffing at the Bloomington Police Department during a work session held before its regular meeting. During his presentation, Chief Roger Aikin said the city’s crime rate put it behind 14 other Illinois cities out of the 18 surveyed for the presentation. Those cities include Urbana, Peoria, Kankakee, Quincy and Belleville. As the City Council struggles with how it will spend its money, Aikin asked the council for more direction on outlining its priorities for the department. “At one time you want us to add 21 officers and now you are talking about cutting 4 percent from the budget,” Aikin said. “I can’t add $2.1 million in costs and still cut the budget. In all probability, the cuts will result in cuts to services.” At a glance What does this mean to you? Skateboard enthusiasts, inline skaters and BMX bikers will be able to practice their stunts at O’Neil Park without getting chased away. Background A local group approached the Bloomington City Council two years ago about building a skate park. On Monday, the council approved spending $170,000 to build the park. How they voted Unanimously. |
