PONTIAC -- Two entities groups will meet later this month to talk about economic development in Livingston County.

The Livingston County Mayors Association and another group developed by the Pontiac Area Chamber of Commerce will meet privately Oct. 24 in Dwight. The second group is separate from the Chamber, but its members include Mike McCoy of McCoy Construction and Ron Minnaert, president of the State Bank of Graymont.

The mayors have been discussing the issue for about three years, Saunemin Mayor Mike Stoecklin said. Members of both groups are still gathering information, but eventually want to form an economic development committee.

“We are looking to work with the local mayors of Livingston County and the county board to just talk with them and to set this up,” McCoy said. “We are currently in the stage of talking and getting as much information as we can.”

“Right now, we are setting up bylaws and the way that people are elected to this board and the exact functions of it,” Pontiac Mayor Scott McCoy said. “We will then be having public hearings in the county where we will invite the public and businesses to share their concerns.”

Minnaert said some private businesses are interested in the project.

Stoecklin recently met with Mike McCoy, Minnaert and Livingston County Board Chairman Bill Flott to discuss ideas.

“We want to bring everyone up to speed on what has happened and to be able to provide as good a template as we possibly can before we get real dialogue going,” Stoecklin said.

The Livingston County Council of Economic Development formed in 1987 but has been on permanent hold since the 2002 resignation of President Mason Hall, Livingston County elections chairman Carl Borngasser said.
