Raymie Harlan first noticed the fire about 4:55 p.m. after he heard an unusual sound at the property he and his wife, Jackie, own at 20334 N. 1100 East Road.

The site is a quarter of a mile north of the intersection of Livingston County roads 700 East and 2000 North.

“I went out to hook up the battery charger to the tractor, then I went back inside and after a while started hearing popping noises,” he said. “When I went back out then I saw it.”

Harlan immediately told his wife to dial 911.

Firefighters arrived to find the two-story, 50-by-70-foot structure engulfed in flames.

It took about half an hour to extinguish the fire, said Flanagan-Graymont Fire Chief John Zimmerman said. Firefighters could be seen putting out small flames in the rubble until about 7:30 p.m.

No one was hurt and the cause remained undetermined Wednesday night.

The smoke could be seen from miles away, which prompted area farmer Daniel Bounds of Flanagan to act.

“I was chisel plowing about a quarter mile west from here when I first started to notice the smoke,” Bounds said at the scene. “Then I noticed the flames and went to go get some help. That’s just what neighbors do.”

A smaller adjacent milk house and an AMC Eagle car parked next to the barn sustained heavy fire damage.

Firefighters kept the fire from spreading to an adjacent storage facility, a silo and a field.

Two area farmers came out and plowed the land around the area to prevent a field fire.

“It’s not typically a practice, but the local farmers did it and we sure are appreciative of that,” Zimmerman said.

The barn housed furniture and lumber, which Harlan said was worth tens of thousands of dollars.

“If it is under $20,000, I would be surprised,” he said.

Harlan also said the building was insured.

About 35 firefighters arrived at the scene from Flanagan-Graymont, Pontiac, Dana, Cornell and Long Point fire departments. Livingston County sheriff’s police was also at the scene.

" I know Danny Bounds and know he is one of those farmers who would jump right in and help out his fellow man whether he knew them or not. Kudos to all the farmers who pitched in and bless Mr. and Mrs Harlen for his loss. "
