Woodland hosts regional meeting of educators

SOUTH STREATOR — Woodland school officials got a chance to show off their building to members of the Corn Belt Division of the Illinois Association of School Boards, something they have not been able to do for 15 years.

Fifty-five educators from up to 20 school districts attended the dinner and programs the division holds twice a year.

“Everyone enjoyed themselves,” said Woodland Superintendent Doug Foster. “It was a positive meeting.”

The division is made up of 32 districts in McLean, Livingston, Woodford, Iroquois and Ford counties. Tuesday’s program included talks on media relations, a legislative update, collective bargaining and wind turbines for schools.

Woodland board members are currently studying how it can erect a $2 million wind tower. Foster said Wednesday a wind turbine would be too expensive for the Woodland district to build on its own and is investigating an agreement with a local wind farm developer as a means of lowering electrical costs.

Getting the division to meet at Woodland was a long-sought goal of the district, Foster said.

“We asked two years ago to be able to host the conference, and now it was our turn” said Foster.

Though Woodland is a rural district, the division is made up of schools of all sizes throughout north-central Illinois.
