NORMAL — When a woman answered a knock at her door Tuesday night in Normal, two strangers, including one with a handgun, forced their way in, police said.

They moved her to another room and left her there. After she heard them leave, she went to look the place over and found her cell phone and wallet stolen.

The incident was about 9:30 p.m. at an apartment in the 100 block of College Park Court, Normal, police said.

Police have made no arrests in the case.

" Can't they trace the cell phone if it is on? In this day and age, it's pretty stupid to steal a cell phone because of the GPS systems they have. "

" In a sense you're right, they can't be everyone to protect everyone, even though NPD does a good job of "being everywhere" as people often state. I know several NPD officers and the reality is that they are completely undermanned, like every other department. I'm sure this will elicit some stupid "because they're writing tickets, blah, blah, blah" comments by someone who drives too fast everywhere they go, but Normal needs to hire more officers. This town has grown tremendously yet staffing levels are the same as they were nearly 10 years ago or more. God help all of you who live on the far east side and need a quick response. With the amount of officers on any given night it's not going to happen. "

" No, there's enough information known to determine that these two situations aren't related. "

" if this is related to the White van that everyone is talking about. In some of the post from yesterday a few people talked about them coming by to "sell" magazines late at night. Perhaps this has something to do with them. "

Not to fault the police.... wrote on Oct 11, 2007 7:02 AM:

" But you see that they can't be here to protect everyone.. The police are REACTIVE, vs. proactive. They will respond to take a report after something happens, almost clerical in their duties. After an incident of assault against my minor-aged daughter, I have a Sig strapped to my belt at all times when I'm home. I will neither confirm nor deny whether I carry off my property, but you would be very surprised at how many people carry concealed in defiance of the Illinois laws. Then again, maybe you wouldn't.
