MORTON — The death of a prominent retired politician who drowned this summer on the family farm was an accident, a Peoria County coroner’s jury ruled Thursday.

County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll previously announced that autopsy results showed former state Rep. John “Jay” Ackerman, R-Morton, drowned after a tractor accident pinned him under water.

Ingersoll said Ackerman, 73, was on a tractor mowing the lawn when it entered a pond on his rural Morton property. The tractor overturned, pinning him in 3 feet of water, she said.

He was pronounced dead at 6 p.m. July 23 at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, Peoria.

Ackerman had served eight terms in the state House, retiring in 1999. He was also a former member of the Tazewell County Board and president of the Morton Park District.
