CCHS boys soccer squad building confidence in fifth year
BLOOMINGTON — Since beginning the boys varsity soccer program in 2003, no Central Catholic High School team had escaped the Intercity Tournament with a victory. That changed in the Saints’ fourth game of the season with a 2-0 win over Bloomington. That gave Central hope that this season may be different. “The Intercity really sparked us,” freshman Hayden Hoerdemann said. The momentum has continued. Five years removed from a five-win season, the Saints are confident and believe a balanced team, seasoned veterans and young stars can carry them deep into postseason. “It’s actually very surprising,” senior forward Patrick Kniery said of the Saints’ rapid success. “When I first started, there wasn’t much of a team. There was just a bunch of guys playing soccer, and we wanted to get a team together. We actually have a shot to do well.” With one regular-season game remaining under first-year coach Patric Molinari, Central Catholic (11-3-1) has already set the school record for most wins in the regular season. The 2005 and 2006 squads each won 10 games before postseason. Molinari, a native of Brazil, is not surprised with the success of his team and admitted the transition to head coach “couldn’t have been better.” “I was prepared for tough situations, but luckily that didn’t happen,” he said. “We have a long way to go, but I’m really, really happy.” Luckily, Molinari has a mixture of youth and experience to lead the Saints into postseason. Through 15 games, Hoerdemann (13 goals) and Kniery (12) are among the top four goal scorers in the Intercity. “They are really important because they’re finishing,” Molinari said. “Both players work really hard for the team. … They are the two that step up.” Hoerdemann is quick to point out that midfielders Kendall Cox and Andy Beoletto are the reason he and Kniery have been so successful. “Our midfielders are excellent,” he said. “They really get the ball up there and find the seams and find the holes up to Patrick and me so we put them in.” Kniery feels that with Hoerdemann on the team for three more years, Central Catholic can be a consistent threat. “I think it’s good because next year they have something to look forward to,” he said. “I think they’re going to do pretty well.” Still, the Saints are focused on the present. Central Catholic enters postseason with the third seed in the Chillicothe IVC Sectional, and the team is feeling confident in the fact they already defeated No. 1 seed Roanoke-Benson 2-1 on Aug. 21. “We’re pretty confident,” Hoerdemann said. “They probably got better, but we got better as well. I think we can do pretty well.” Shooting starsThe top seven goal scorers among Intercity soccer players through Tuesday’s games: Nate Gottsacker, West 15 Zach Wall, U High 13 H.
