High school notes: BHS diver Steffen tracking college home
Bloomington’s Paige Steffen, 13th in last year’s state diving competition, will compete in track in college and has Miami (Ohio) and Iowa on her list of suitors. “As good as she is in diving, she’s that much better in track,” said BHS swim coach Bob Loy, whose star ranks fifth in Pantagraph area history with a six-dive score of 225.05 points. She also ranks fifth in area history in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 44.99 seconds. She placed seventh in last year’s Class AA state meet. She also has bests of 15.3 in the 100 hurdles, 17 feet, 9 inches in the long jump and 35-9 in the triple jump. “I’m very excited about that,” said Steffen of the recruiting process, which she hopes to complete before Christmas. “I’m starting to narrow down.” Steffen plans to be a political science major with a pre-law minor. Fieldcrest faculty field team Fieldcrest cross country coach Carol Bauer didn’t try to recruit the offspring of her co-workers, it just turned out that way as seven Knights have parents who work with Bauer at Fieldcrest West Grade School in Toluca or are teachers’ aides for the school district. Class 1A state title contender Brian Peterson is the son of P.E. teacher Greg Peterson. No. 2 runner T.J. White is the son of teacher Becky White. No. 3 runner Will Wyss, whose brother Guthrie is also on the team, is the son of art teacher Gail Wyss. No. 5 runner Adam Ehrnthaller is the son of teacher Rosemary Ehrnthaller. Kinsly Tarmann’s mother, Kim, is a teacher’s aide, as is Megan Rients’ mother, Suzi. Heat cancels race After seven female cross country runners collapsed from the heat during Saturday’s West Aurora Invitational, where Bloomington was entered for the first time, the boys race was canceled. Brown does a lot for NCHS Junior diver Shelby Brown of Normal Community notched the 10th-best score in Pantagraph-area history Tuesday with 215.55 points, a total that ranks third in school history.
