Out Loud: BHS’ Clemens loves a laugh
BLOOMINGTON — Tara Clemens said her favorite movies are anything that has Will Ferrell in the cast. “He makes every movie funny,” the Bloomington High School junior tennis player said. Clemens has the ability to make others laugh as well. With a unique personality that combines sarcasm and straightforwardness, Clemens can turn an ordinary conversation into a comic routine. Following a recent meet, the Pantagraph caught up with a young lady who hopes to continue her tennis career into college in the state of Illinois. Q: If you had a day off like Ferris Bueller, what would you do? A: “I’ve never been in downtown Bloomington very much. I would explore, do my thing. I have never been to Castle Theater, and I always hear that’s a cool place.” Q: What would you want to do in downtown Bloomington? A: “I don’t know what’s down there. I want to explore. I haven’t been over in that neck of the woods.” Q: You said you like rollercoasters. Have you ever gotten sick while riding one? A: “No, but I’ve sat next to people who want to get sick.” Q: Do you think Britney Spears should have custody of her kids? A: “From what I hear, I think K-Fed (Kevin Federline) should get those kids because Britney hasn’t been making very smart decisions.” Q: Why did you go with blue fingernail polish? A: “I painted those during (literature) class. We were watching a movie (on Edgar Allan Poe). I probably don’t want that in the paper.” Q: Are there any other weird things you have done in class? A: “During that same class, my teacher caught me brushing my hair with a ruler. It was nerd day. I felt like I could do whatever I wanted.” Q: How does one brush hair with a ruler? A: “It didn’t work. That’s the problem. I was sitting there getting frustrated.” Q: Why aren’t there more movies about tennis? A: “People don’t seem to care that much about tennis. I walk around school saying, ‘Hey, I got a tennis match today,’ and people are like, ‘Hey, good for you.’ ” Q: Do you have to wear a skirt to play tennis? A: “It’s not a rule. It’s just kind of what everyone does. The last few years I’ve been wearing shorts, I didn’t really fit in. Everyone else was wearing skirts and dresses.” Q: Everyone jumps on Anna Kournikova because she has never won a tournament. Do you think you could beat her? A: “No. She made it to the pros, so obviously she’s good. I don’t think I could do any justice with that.” Q: What is the key difference between soccer and tennis? A: “They’re pretty much complete opposites. I mean hands and feet.” Q: If you were to skip school and go out to lunch, where would you go? A: “Noodles is by far my favorite. A lot of guys I talk to don’t like that place. I don’t know, I guess they’re not pasta lovers. They have the best macaroni and cheese.” Q: You said you worked for your father’s insurance company this summer. How was it? A: “Probably the worst job ever. I had to look through files and throw away old files for hours. Then I had to take out staples for hours.” Q: You said “Titanic” and “Pearl Harbor” are two of your favorite movies. Why are movies about tragedy at the top of your list? A: “I don’t know if I just like disasters, but I love those movies. That is a little weird. I didn’t realize it. … That’s not very uplifting I guess, but I like them anyway.” Know a varsity athlete who would make a fun “Out Loud” candidate? Send a suggestion to sports@pantagraph.com.
