City zoo to host crafts, fall fest

BLOOMINGTON — Visitors will be admitted free Sunday to Miller Park Zoo, which will host a Community Day and Arts & Craft Show from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The zoo is at 1020 S. Morris Ave.

The zoo also is the site of Bloomington Parks and Recreation’s third annual Fall Festival, which will be 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Global studies topic of forum

PEORIA — Retired Eureka High School teacher Don Samford, president of Peoria Area World Affairs Council, will lead the Global Studies forum today and Saturday at Bradley University.

Bloomington and Eureka high schools are International High School Initiative pilot schools sponsored by the council. Bloomington High School won the council’s Scholastic Bowl competition last year.

Registration is $20 for the general public and $10 for students and teachers. Call (309) 677-2452.

Celebrity dinner to aid Olympics

BLOOMINGTON — Heartland Area Special Olympics will hold its celebrity waiter dinner from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 22 at Central Station Cafe.

The event will include silent and live auctions and a meal. Celebrities include ISU coaches, local sports figures, business leaders and local politicians.

Tickets are $35. Proceeds benefit Special Olympics athletes. Call (309) 888-2012. 

Equestrian event set this weekend

BLOOMINGTON — More than 150 equestrians from a five-state area will compete this weekend in the seventh annual Hunter Oaks Horse Trials.

Endorsed by U.S. Equestrian and recognized by the United States Eventing Association, Hunter Oaks Horse Trials features the sport of eventing at beginner novice, novice and training levels. Participants compete in dressage, show jumping and cross-country events.

The three-phase competition begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Interstate Center with dressage tests and show jumping. On Sunday, the event moves to Hunter Oaks Equestrian Center, 236 MacAllen Lake Road, Carlock, for the cross-country portion of the horse trials, which begin at 9 a.m.

Admission is free.

Special ed program planned in Lincoln

LINCOLN — Free training is available next month in Lincoln for parents of children in special education programs.

“Collaboration: Schools and Families Working Together” will be from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 1 at ADI Educational Center, 305 N. Kickapoo. The program will help parents understand how to work with individual education plans, build relationships with school administrators and staff, and improve communication.

Atlanta food drive aids Logan pantry

ATLANTA — Atlanta United Methodist Church will host a food drive Saturday to Oct. 20 for the Lincoln Logan Food Pantry.

Volunteers will place bags on doorsteps on Saturday and pick them up Oct. 20. Donations can be dropped in front of the church, at the corner of Second and Race streets, or call (217) 648-5002.

Suggested items are canned goods, cereal, peanut butter, shampoo, diapers and any nonperishable items. For those who wish to make a cash donation, organizers say $1 equals one canned good. Make checks payable to Lincoln Logan Food Pantry.

Liver walk, run planned Sunday

BLOOMINGTON — The American Liver Foundation is sponsoring its first Walk It Off Bloomington Liver Wellness Walk & Fun Run at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Tipton Park.

Registration and warm-ups begin at 1 p.m. The event also will include children’s activities. The event supports the American Liver Foundation’s Illinois Chapter, which funds research, education and advocacy for people affected by liver-related diseases.

Registration is $15 on the day of the walk or $10 before the walk at www.active.com/donate/liverbloom.
