Woman pleads not guilty to supplying beer at party where teen died

PONTIAC — A Chenoa woman has pleaded not guilty to charges of supplying alcohol to an underage drinking party which led to the death of a 16-year-old boy.

Anne Haugen, 49, of Chenoa was charged in August with unlawfully contributing to the criminal delinquency of a juvenile, a Class 4 felony, and unlawful sale of alcoholic liquor, a Class A misdemeanor.

Authorities said Haugen delivered a keg of beer in February to her 16-year-old daughter during halftime of a high school basketball game in Fairbury. She took the keg out of the trunk of her car and put it in her daughter’s trunk, authorities said.

The beer was intended for a high school drinking party in Forrest.

Authorities said that at that party, someone inside the home yelled “Cops!” People at the party ran outside into a nearby field. Everyone returned inside except Travis Steidinger, 16, of Fairbury.

He apparently walked three miles through snow before he collapsed and died of hypothermia, authorities said. He was found dead at 10:35 a.m. Feb. 18 in a field one mile west of Forrest.

The temperature was 6 degrees below zero at the time, and Steidinger was wearing only a polo shirt, T-shirt, jeans, underwear and socks. He was not wearing a coat or shoes.

A coroner’s inquest jury ealier this year ruled Steidinger’s death an accident.

Toxicology results indicate his blood-alcohol level was .031.

A pretrial hearing is set for Dec. 20 at the Livingston County Courthouse, and a jury trial is scheduled for January.

" the pantagraph would not let anyone blog on the same kind of thing that happened here in McLean county. A 19 year old dies after getting alcohol at a reception held by a good ol boy, he was not charged. Had very the police on his side and at his party. Oh and he is a reserve officier as stated in the pantagraph. "

Anyone know of a solid study? wrote on Oct 12, 2007 6:39 PM:

" Is the effect of booze higher in teens than in adults? Does the blood content of alcohol have greater effect depending on the size of the person? I think it is possible .031 in Travis could have affected his judgement more than a larger person with a higher alcohol content. Should the limit vary according to body weight and size? Please provide links to studies that address this theory or offers proofs. I've read that when a person, such as the adult who froze to death a mile or so east of Chatsworth a couple years ago, begins to freeze, takes off their clothes because they think they're burning up. Did Travis flee the party wearing more clothing? Were his coat and other outer garments found? Where? Hopefully a lot of the rumor and speculation will be dispelled with the transcipts of the court action and full disclosure to the news media. This incident and trial can have a deeper meaning of lessons learned and Travis would not have died in vain. "

who is to blame wrote on Oct 12, 2007 5:02 PM:

" Teens are going to drink, they always have and always will. The church doesn't help the matter by making it seem as if anything they do before they decide to join is okay, but afterwards, they are little saints, and much better than the rest of us. I say the boy was afraid of his parents/church members finding him there if he was arrested. It is a tragedy, but what is going to change it? People need to change first. Second, whoever supplied it, nobody forced him to drink it. He had a choice. What a sad waste, in any case, a kid caught between wanting to fit in, and afraid to be himself. "

" The legal drinking age is just a number - a number set by our legal system based upon the knowlege they have that a person becomes responsible to make good decisions. Whether you agree with the law or not, is irrelevant - IT'S A LAW. If you choose to break that law, you must pay the consequences. If what this mom is accused of is true, she should be punished. What a coward for not at least being at the party (as an adult) to ensure everyone's safety since she obviously had no problems with breaking the law! "

" How dare you? The kids are to blame for Travis' death? Is that what you really feel? How sad for you. Travis made a choice just like the others to go to a party. He made a choice just like all the others there to drink. He made the choice just like the others to run when someone yelled "cops". Why on earth would you blame the other kids for his death? Everyone involved with this party made a choice to be involved. I don't think that anyone was forced to do anything they didn't want to do. You seem like a very cold, cruel person. May God Bless you. "

" the parents of party goers are not responsible anymore than a family member of yours is responsible for some of your silly posts. The woman charged if the allegations are true bares the full majority of the blame. No beer no party, the parents of the other party goers are not accused of supplying the booze. "

" Your right reader, alcohol is readily available to everyone including childeren. It doen't change the fact though, if an adult sells to, or provides alcohol to a minor it is ILLEGAL whether they drink it or not. If you don't like that, then move to McLean County. The states attorney there doesn't feel it necessary to bring charges for things like that. Especially when the person providing the alcohol is the top ranking sheriff's reserve deputy. RIP Sam "

" We need a state's attorney like this in McLean County. Imagine that, little 'ol Livingston County does "right" while bigger, (supposedly better) McLean County can't get it right. "

BILLY BOB wrote on Oct 12, 2007 1:52 PM:

" How many of the kids that were at the party have been charged with anything? The kids are the ones responsible for this death. They allowed there friend to drink and then left him out in the cold. I say charge every kid that was at that party as co-conspirators to illegal consumption and distribution of alcohol to minors. Every one of them and their parents needs to be names in a suit of wrongful death for the part they played in this travesty. Holding one women accountable does nothing to curb teen drinking. Hold the teens responsible....ALL OF THEM!!!!! "

" Kids drink... ok, so what if the adult did not force it down the child's throat. If the alcohol was not readily available to young adults, these issues would be avoided. Punishing the person who purchased the alcohol will send a message to other adults who think about purchasing illegal items for children. Adults need to start acting like adults instead of trying to be friends with the high school kids. How "cool" is the person who purchased the alcohol now? "

underage drinking wrote on Oct 12, 2007 11:54 AM:

" Underage drinking is just that, under age. Under the age of making responsible decisions about things. Anyone that gives alcohol to a minor and that minor dies is no different than if a bar allows an adult to leave intoxicated. If the adult kills someone the bar gets sued. Why is anyone worried about being sued anyway. This child was a sophomore in high school and should have been around to graduate high school go to prom and have the rest of his life. He paid with his life for his bad choices can we just learn from it so no one else has to give up their son or daughter because some adult didn't abide by the law. "

" This is to a reader. So you wouldnt sue any one ? You have to be related to the parties involved. Dont you take this tradgedy and try to take the blame away from all the adults involved. "

" I'm not sure how many of you have seen a keg, but I highly doubt that this lady had it in her trunk. It wouldn't fit standing upright (unless she somehow didn't close the trunk) and if the keg was on it's side it would be rolling all over the place. I would also highly doubt that she took the keg from "her trunk to her daughter's trunk" by herself. "

" I dont see anything in the article about the parents wanting to sue. Did I miss something? His judgement probably wasnt impaired other than he was scared - he was probably ashamed and didnt want his parents or the church to find out. "

" Why is it that when a young person drinks and dies that is when parents sue.....it is not like they held him down.....maybe I am wrong but it was a bad choice that had a consequence.....suing anyone is not going to bring him back....and yes I have 2 boys and they are young adults that I know now they drank underage and if something would have happened to them as in this situation I would have not sued....bad choice they made and that is just what it is...and to the parents that know what your child is doing and where they are doing it...if something happens to them and you did nothing at that time....shame on you if you sue!!!!
