Rennette hangs up skates
BLOOMINGTON — Tyler Rennette, who was voted Most Valuable Player by his Bloomington PrairieThunder teammates in the franchise’s first season, announced his retirement from professional hockey Thursday. The 28-year-old Rennette has accepted a position with Next Testing, which runs scouting combines throughout the Midwest for youth and junior players. Rennette’s former Peoria Rivermen teammate, Mike Valley, owns the Madison, Wis.-based company. “It was a tough decision because playing hockey has been something I’ve done all my life,” said Rennette, whose wife gave birth to the couple’s first child nine months ago. “You know your playing days are going to end one day, but when it does happen it makes it even harder. “But I also have to look to the future and think of my family.” Thunder coach Derek Booth, the father of three young children, respected Rennette’s decision. “Tyler is doing what he believes is best for his family and his future,” Booth said. “We appreciate what he did for the PrairieThunder organization last year. He was a key figure in helping the franchise get on its feet the first year.” Rennette, a native of North Bay, Ontario, was a second-round selection and the 40th overall pick in the National Hockey League entry draft by the St. Louis Blues in 1997. The nine-year veteran center led the Thunder with a team-high 33 assists and 53 points in 65 games last season despite missing 11 games with an injury. He also served as team captain and scored a team-high four game-winning goals. The Thunder will open the International Hockey League regular season Oct. 20 at Flint. Its first home game is Oct. 26 at 7:05 p.m. against the Fort Wayne Komets at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. |
