Normal West hosts BHS with playoffs on both teams' minds
Injuries to key players contributed to a rare two-game losing streak for Bloomington High School’s football team, leaving the Purple Raiders 3-3 and putting their Pantagraph area-best 20-year playoff streak in jeopardy. | Photo gallery BHS coach Rigo Schmelzer didn’t dwell on either streak with his players. He focused on Champaign Centennial, and instructed the Raiders to do the same. The resulting 28-14 win last week ended one streak. Tonight, BHS can extend the other with a victory over Intercity rival Normal West at Normal. “You set goals, and making the playoffs has always been a goal of ours,” Schmelzer said. “For a while, the risk of not having enough wins to do it might have been there. But you can’t worry about that. You just have to work and get better each week and work with the kids you have. In football, I think immediacy takes precedence over the long term.” The short-term reality is a win will get BHS (4-3) to five victories, and the Raiders should have enough playoff points (total number of opponents’ victories) to secure an at-large bid. A win tonight and another next week at Decatur Eisenhower (0-7) would give BHS six victories and guarantee a spot. Again, Schmelzer isn’t filling his players’ heads with all of that. “As a staff, we just want to make sure the kids are playing their best football,” he said. “Week in and week out, we prepare them the best we can and at the end (of the season), we see where we are. We know we’re going against a good program and we’re playing on their field. We felt we played better last week. We need to do the same this week.” Normal West has reached five wins and also should have enough playoff points to qualify. However, West coach Darren Hess would prefer his Wildcats (5-2) end the regular season with momentum-building Big 12 Conference wins over BHS and state-ranked Mattoon (6-1). “I look at these last two games as playoff type atmospheres because of who we’re playing,” Hess said. “If you can close out and go 7-2 in this conference, it speaks volumes. If we can beat Bloomington, which is a traditional power, and Mattoon, who’s having a great year, we’ll be on the right path.” The 7 p.m. game will feature standout junior tailbacks in BHS’ Darrelynn Dunn and West’s Darius Bell. Dunn started at tailback last week for the first time in four weeks because of a broken right thumb. He ran for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Bell had 112 yards and four TDs in a 49-16 victory over Urbana. “We have to stop what they want to do first, and that’s run,” Schmelzer said. “They’ve been pretty straightforward about that. But they’ve proven they can throw the ball as well.” Hess said West must “control Dunn and limit the amount of touches they have. That means we’re going to have to establish Darius Bell.” University High (4-3, 3-3 in Corn Belt Conference) also could reach five victories tonight with a win at Eureka (3-4, 2-4). While U High likely would have enough playoff points for its first berth since 2003, Pioneer coach Kurt Olson wants to remove the guesswork. “Our goal is not to hope we get in. We want to guarantee ourselves a spot with six wins,” said Olson, whose team plays state-ranked Mahomet-Seymour (6-1) next week. “To accomplish that goal, we have to end the year with two wins.” Should BHS and U High qualify, it would put all five Intercity teams in the playoffs. That has not happened in the same season since West opened (1995). Prior to West’s opening, the last time every Intercity school reached the playoffs was 1987. El Paso-Gridley and Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley (both 4-3) also need a win to reach five victories. Neither has an easy road. EPG plays at Fieldcrest (6-1) and finishes at home against Heyworth (5-2). GCMS plays host to Heyworth and then goes to Flanagan-Woodland (7-0). There is no margin for error for Eureka, Fisher, Iroquois West and Tremont. All are 3-4 and must win their final two games to have a chance at an at-large berth.
