Normal West hosts BHS with playoffs on both teams' minds
Advertisement

Injuries to key players contributed to a rare two-game losing streak for Bloomington High School’s football team, leaving the Purple Raiders 3-3 and putting their Pantagraph area-best 20-year playoff streak in jeopardy. | Photo gallery

BHS coach Rigo Schmelzer didn’t dwell on either streak with his players. He focused on Champaign Centennial, and instructed the Raiders to do the same. The resulting 28-14 win last week ended one streak. Tonight, BHS can extend the other with a victory over Intercity rival Normal West at Normal.

“You set goals, and making the playoffs has always been a goal of ours,” Schmelzer said. “For a while, the risk of not having enough wins to do it might have been there. But you can’t worry about that. You just have to work and get better each week and work with the kids you have. In football, I think immediacy takes precedence over the long term.”

The short-term reality is a win will get BHS (4-3) to five victories, and the Raiders should have enough playoff points (total number of opponents’ victories) to secure an at-large bid. A win tonight and another next week at Decatur Eisenhower (0-7) would give BHS six victories and guarantee a spot.

Again, Schmelzer isn’t filling his players’ heads with all of that.

“As a staff, we just want to make sure the kids are playing their best football,” he said. “Week in and week out, we prepare them the best we can and at the end (of the season), we see where we are. We know we’re going against a good program and we’re playing on their field. We felt we played better last week. We need to do the same this week.”

Normal West has reached five wins and also should have enough playoff points to qualify. However, West coach Darren Hess would prefer his Wildcats (5-2) end the regular season with momentum-building Big 12 Conference wins over BHS and state-ranked Mattoon (6-1).

“I look at these last two games as playoff type atmospheres because of who we’re playing,” Hess said. “If you can close out and go 7-2 in this conference, it speaks volumes. If we can beat Bloomington, which is a traditional power, and Mattoon, who’s having a great year, we’ll be on the right path.”

The 7 p.m. game will feature standout junior tailbacks in BHS’ Darrelynn Dunn and West’s Darius Bell. Dunn started at tailback last week for the first time in four weeks because of a broken right thumb. He ran for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Bell had 112 yards and four TDs in a 49-16 victory over Urbana.

“We have to stop what they want to do first, and that’s run,” Schmelzer said. “They’ve been pretty straightforward about that. But they’ve proven they can throw the ball as well.”

Hess said West must “control Dunn and limit the amount of touches they have. That means we’re going to have to establish Darius Bell.”

University High (4-3, 3-3 in Corn Belt Conference) also could reach five victories tonight with a win at Eureka (3-4, 2-4). While U High likely would have enough playoff points for its first berth since 2003, Pioneer coach Kurt Olson wants to remove the guesswork.

“Our goal is not to hope we get in. We want to guarantee ourselves a spot with six wins,” said Olson, whose team plays state-ranked Mahomet-Seymour (6-1) next week. “To accomplish that goal, we have to end the year with two wins.”

Should BHS and U High qualify, it would put all five Intercity teams in the playoffs. That has not happened in the same season since West opened (1995). Prior to West’s opening, the last time every Intercity school reached the playoffs was 1987.

El Paso-Gridley and Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley (both 4-3) also need a win to reach five victories. Neither has an easy road. EPG plays at Fieldcrest (6-1) and finishes at home against Heyworth (5-2). GCMS plays host to Heyworth and then goes to Flanagan-Woodland (7-0).

There is no margin for error for Eureka, Fisher, Iroquois West and Tremont. All are 3-4 and must win their final two games to have a chance at an at-large berth.

" im a former ironmen player...n dont for get in 2004 nchs had one of their weakest teams in years going 6-4 but we only lost to bloomington at innercity 6 to 0....point is, once adrenaline takes over at innercity, anything can happen...i was also a part of the team the past two seasons and will say that morris was suppose to be unbeatable two years ago, but yet we still left with a little bit of dignity only losing by 5, instead of BHS average of losing by like 100 each year at state "

" I find it interesting that YEAH RIGHT feels NCHS faced no competiton. Fact is JCA Lost early in post season last year. Perhaps he has forgotten why it was NCHS even faced Thornridge, it was due to the fact that Thronridge defeated BHS the prior week. "

" You BHS fans are starting to sound an awuful lot like Cub fans. "We would have won if..." "Well if it wasn't for X,Y, and Z you guys wouldn't have won last year. The really sad part is that the Cubs at least won it all in 1908 but BHS never has. Last year the Cards and NCHS both went all the way. :) "

" I can't believe you stayed up all night just to write those posts! It doesn't matter. BHS had their chance in 2005 to beat Normal in the playoffs, and guess what, they didn't. So all of this nonsense about multipliers is worthless. Here's one more fact. If you look in your IHSA playoffs football program this year...Look under 2006 Class 6A Champions. "

" I really hope it’s JCA vs. NCHS in the finals. I really doubt the IRON would even make it that far this year. They don’t have their 2 golden boy coaches and because of that the Irons D isn’t that god. BHS this year has one of the weakest teams we’ve had in 20 years and BHS gave the Iron a run for their money. So like it or not The Iron will not win another Championship this year unless JCA gets knocked out early. Iron fans get of your high horse and let’s just watch the games. I wouldn’t be on here saying all this stuff if it wasn’t for people like Mr. Commonalty. So the more you Iron fans jump on here and talk smack the worse our replies will be. I have never disrespected the IRON or their staff but al you Iron posters sure have. Again grow up and Show some class. "

" BHS has played the # 1 teams in state and that’s why they lost those games. We were the # 1 Public school in class 6 a for 3 years straight. I'm not on here to cut the Iron down or even the coaching staff. Hud has done and excellent job with the Iron and most of the credit goes to him and the players for believing in his new/borrowed system. The Iron was no doubt in my mind the best team in 6a last year. AGAIN 6A CLASS NOT THE ENTIRE STATE. If NCHS played Mt Carmel, St. Rita, or even New-Lenox Providence last year I would say it would be a completely different ballgame. What I'm trying to do on here is make you Iron fans understand the truth. NCHS has never played against the talent the Raiders have in the past. Now the only Chicago powerhouse left for the Iron to play is JCA. Again because of a multiplier. JCA is the # 2 team in the state. "

" 2nd the year Morris beat JCA they were having a rebuilding year and I believe they went 5-4 in a very tough conference. Also because of the Multiplier JCA went from 5a to 6a. Again on a rebuilding year. That’s why Morris beat JCA. So now since we have taken care of that lets get down to Biz. NCHS didn’t play any Chicago Catholic or private teams and they probably wont until playoffs this year or until they move up in class. Oh by the way that could very well be this year. NCHS has a great team but their not the # 1 team in state. Maybe top 20 but not even close to the # 1 team. The reason why I compare NCHS to all of the Chicago Catholic Powerhouses is Because BHS played them and NCHS hasn’t. Also Mr. Commonalty said the IRON is the # 1 team in state which is way off base. Again top 20 but not # 1. "

To: Football Guy from yeah right 2 wrote on Oct 13, 2007 12:12 AM:

" BHS Head coach Terry McCombs started to use the 5-2 D and Power Option O. He was a legend at BHS. He then moved to another school up north. When he comes back down to the Twin Cities he gets offered money to coach at NCHS as the Defensive coordinator. Iron also brought in John Macintyre who won 2 state championships at Central Catholic. Add that with some talent and you automatically have a good team from the coaches alone. Now let’s look at the Iron before these 2 coaches. Iron was mostly a passing O with 4-3 D. Now they are a Power option O and 5-2 D. stolen straight from BHS. Now that’s why Iron now have a good D coach Terry McCombs. "

To: Football Guy from yeah right 1 wrote on Oct 13, 2007 12:10 AM:

" First let me say this. NCHS is a great team. This year and last. I'm not knocking them and I don’t have any sour grapes or any animosity towards NCHS. I'm just telling the facts unlike Football guy. He doesn’t realize that Mt. Carmel is the # 1 team in the State of Illinois and they are actually a 6 a team. But because of a multiplier they are now an 8a team. Same with St. Rita and even New-Lenox Providence. They are all 6a teams and they compete at the 8a level and win constantly, so to say Bloomington didn’t have a great Defense is ludicrous. BHS played some of the best teams in the Nation. Not just the State. "

" The comment everyone is responding to is the one by Commonality that stated Normal is "the best team in the state" which I don't agree with, maybe in 6A last year, but the state...no "

Football Guy wrote on Oct 12, 2007 5:03 PM:

" Sounds like a bit of sour grapes by these Bloomington fans. First off, comparing Normal to 7 and 8A teams is dumb because Normal doesn't play in those classes. The thing with Bloomington during those State runs is that they did not have a very good defense. Normal is good on defense every year, and defense wins championships. Who's to say Normal couldn't have beaten any of those teams? Morris beat JCA in the 1st round last year and then came down to Normal and got shut out by 30. Like it or not, Normal was the best team in 6A state football last year, and until somebody beats them, they still are. "

yeah right 2 wrote on Oct 12, 2007 2:49 PM:

" NCHS has never played a True Chicago Catholic Powerhouse like BHS has. We played Mt. Carmel who should be a 6A team but they aren't because of a multiplier, We also played National ranked Mundelein Carmel. They were ranked 12 in the US. We also played and beat St. Rita at their home field in the Ghetto of Chicago on a Friday night, and Finally New-Lenox Providence. We played nothing but Chicago Catholic Schools. Who did NCHS play? They surely didn't play any private schools. They played a very weak Morris and even weaker Thornridge. Who is basically an unknown in 6A. IRON fans need to realize they aren't the best team in State or in the 6A class. I really hope Iron play JCA this year. So when they loose, I'll be on here saying I told you so. Grow up and show some class. It's called sportsmanship. Your making your school and your town look bad. I'll sum your post up in one word. WEAK. "

Yeah right wrote on Oct 12, 2007 2:49 PM:

" If you think the Iron are the best team in State then your obviously 1 Excedrin tablet short of being a full medicine cabinet. The Iron would get whooped by all of the 7A and 8A Chicago powerhouse's. Like Mt. Carmel, Saint Rita, The Wheaton's, Brother Rice, Glenbard's and Naperville. NCHS isn't even the best team in 6A. JCA (Joliet Catholic Academy) is by far. They should have beat the #1 team in state which is Mt. Carmel. They lost by 1 point on the last play of the game. "
