Weber gets verbal commitment from Sterling junior
CHAMPAIGN — Bruce Weber’s big day of recruiting Thursday was better than first thought.
The Illinois men’s basketball coach, who announced the signings of a pair of strong in-state guards, also received a verbal commitment from Joseph Bertrand, a 6-foot-5 wing player from Sterling High School.
Bertrand’s decision came shortly after Weber received similar good news from guard D.J. Richardson of Peoria Central and guard Brandon Paul of Warren Township in Gurnee.
Bertrand’s mother, Lorita Bertrand, said the decisions by Richardson and Paul to join Weber’s program helped her son make up his mind.
“He knows D.J. better than Brandon,” she said Friday morning. “Just knowing D.J. and Joseph are tops in their class for 2009, I think he felt very comfortable knowing they were going to be an awesome force together.”
Lorita Bertrand said there was a sense of relief when her son told Weber about his decision.
“Yes, I can see it in his face, in his walk,” she said. “The way he carried himself, he was just glowing, just sunshine. He felt very comfortable. And it’s not like once he decided there were doubts. He was able to relax, to exhale.”
Bertrand chose the Illini over Southern Illinois and Wisconsin. He also entertained scholarship offers from Bradley, Marquette and Notre Dame.
Bertrand averaged 12.9 points and 3.3 assists per game as a sophomore.
